MG MGF Technical - Door/roof seal replacment
How Hard/easy is it to change the front half of the door/roof seal( the one from the sill that goes up the door and over the window to the other sill)??. Is it just a pull off/push on rubber seal, or does it require some form of sealant/mastic to be applied???. Proper pi55ed down last night, and leaked in from corner of roof and mirror adjusters..........all over my newly fitted TF interior!! :o( |

I don't suppose that the TF is much different than the F, so the answer I think is 'easy'. Have a look at http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/Servicing2.html |

Thanks Tony. Looks easy enough, got some 2nd hand seals of a late TF, so will mastic instead of tape!!. Mel. Interior is only cloth, but out of an 04 TF, dont know if you did the carpets when you did your interior, but if your planning it...Dont!,.... the carpets are the worst fit of any car I have ever owned, cheap, thin, and C**P, must have used 20ft of velcro tape and its still loose in places!. :o( |

You may also need to correctly align the 'Cheater' (the triangular rubber/plastic bit the mirror is attached to). From memory, you need to remove the door card undo a couple of bolts (one at the top of the door and one at the bottom) and then ensure that there is a consistent distance between the C pillar and the cheater edge, again, from memory I think this should be consistent 8mm. The correct proceedure can be found in the workshop manual. Tim |

Mark, where are you going to get the mastic from? Not looked in Halfords, but am planning a similar job in the very near future! :o) |

Rob. TBH was just going to use a black silicon based mastic that I use through work, its for external use (building trade) and sticks like the peverbial to a blanket. Will send you a tube if you want!!. |
Mark.L |
I'd love some. One question though - it hasn't got a high salt content has it? I know that domestic silicone sealant frequently has a high salt load, leading to potential corrosion problems on car metal work (Mike Satur pointed out this potential problem some years ago) - it might be worth looking into getting the puka automotive stuff? |

Rob Will try some on my fish and chips and let you know!!!! |
Mark.L |
Yummy! Those chips will be worse than eating Black Jacks!!! LOL |

BLACK fish tank sealant free of all the nasties, about 9.00 a tube though, bonds glass tanks and withstands h the enormous water presure and lasts a lfetime, stinks untill cured, just a thought price wise..... |

You may find this link useful. SIKA produce a full range of adhesives for the Automotive industry. http://www.sika.co.uk/ind-uk-home/ind-transportation-start/ind-bonding-and-sealing2.htm I've bought some structural adhesive (Sika292) which is a marine grade and will stick anything to anything even in a marine environment. |
