MG MGF Technical - Door Water Shedder glue
Having removed the door cards and replaced the window regulators, I have some replacement Water Shedders to fit. My minor problem is removing the 'old' glue, that once retained the OEM Water Shedder. I've tried white spirit, Autoglym 'Tar Remover', Turps and Label Remover. I'm a bit hesitant to try anything too agressive in case it takes the paint off too, any known solutions would be greatly received. Thanks. |

Mild heat from a hairdyer might soften the glue enough to scrape off with a plastic spatula. Watch your wiring though. You might also try a solvent based on an ester or ketone, eg ethyl acetate or acetone - but these are very smelly and flammable. Chris |

Mike, Don't use acetone/cellulose thinners as these WILL take your paint off. Try methylated spirits if gentle heating does not work. Good luck. willyphixitt |

Better Idea to try to find what type of glue it is before using any harsh chemicals on it. There may be chemical reactions which will take your paint off, not just the solvent itself. BC |

a chisel can be used to good extent on hard glues, soft knocks, use the rake side of the chisel to ensue the knife edge bites the glue not the paint |

For the record I should have explained that acetone is fine on old paint, but don't try it on a coat that has not hardened all the way through, which takes about 12 months. Chris |

Chris, Sorry mate but have to disagree with you. acetone will take paint off no matter how old. Just wipe any paint with a cloth soaked in acetone/cellulose thinners and you will have that paint colour on the cloth. willyphixitt |
