MG MGF Technical - Drilling Thermostat

How many holes should I drill in my thermostat and what size do you recommended as a possible aid to prevent HGF in my 97 mgf vvc.

The problem with too many holes, or too large a hole is dramatically increased warm up times, which accelerates engine wear and increases fuel consumption.

The concensus seems to be that a single 2.5mm hole positioned at the top of the thermostat is best, however I've opted for a slight adaptation of the solution initially offered by Carl.

having spent a little research time in Halfords, i found that the 82 degC thermostat for the K engined metro has a small bleed hole in the centre, so I am using one of those.

the advantage - in my perception - is that the thermostat opens earlier, thus reducing the temp difference between the cold and hot water, and the bleed hole, although small, will allow any trapped air to bleed through, and also a small amount of coolant further aiding the temperature gradient.

If you look in the archives there is quite a lot in there, and Will Munns for one, has certainly written at length about it.

Cheers Mike,
Sounds a sensible option. Was it difficult to remove/replace thermostat housing, any special tools required?
I've taking the engine cover off my car when I replaced the handbrake cables but I didn't check the access to the thermostat.

So your arms are still unhurt ;)
It's an ar*e to get out the thermostat and a bigger to get in a reworked.

I'd instead recommend to getting in the new remote thermostat (PRT type) and replace the old thermostat in that housing with that large washer....

Just while you are on the matter.
Hurt arms will happen in any way.

drill as many holes as possible or take it out.( she's areal bitch to take out)

Have a look at this

for an in depth explanation of why drilling the thermostat is not as good as fitting a PRT.
