MG MGF Technical - Drive shaft gaiter - DIY?

Second post for the day - my NSR drive shaft gaiter is either not fitting properly or split. Can anyone tell me how this is accessed in order to replace it? Has anyone found a clever way of patching or re-locating the gaiter?

Thanks

What's the problem Chaz? Do you mean that the differential oil seal has failed?

Rob,

As far as I understand it and can explain what I've seen, the gaiter is set in about two foot from the wheel and there is a matching one the other side. It is described as a drive-shaft gaiter so I assume that it is not the diff oil seal. I recall having these go on the 2CV (student days) where some of the inner wing metal could catch the gaiter.

The gaiter is a ribbed, rubber cone open at both ends and secured by jubilee clips, I think. The wider end (towards the middle of the car) is either split or simply off its mounting. I need to look again, but I assume the former. Anyway to put a new one on without removing a lot of wheel/brake/ other gubbins?

you can get a split gaiter kit which slips over and is glued in place but they sound Heath Robinson to me and I wouldn't recommend. Proper gaiter replacement means undo hub nut, undo suspension to allow hub to move out of the way, remove complete shaft, dismantle and fix on bench, refit etc. Easy when you've done it once.

Thanks David S. Seems like a job for a professional or a long summer's day or two!

I confess I've not done this on an F - but on a Monty I'd allow an hour without snags, a morning at worst.

Thanks David. I'll investigate, but I think I'll save it for dryer weather anyhow!
