MG MGF Technical - Drivers Door Problems!!!

Dear All, I am having a problem opening the drivers door, i have to yank it quite hard to get it to open. I think the windows are some how getting stuck on the window seal.

The drivers side door also seems to rattle a lot, and it doesn't seem to be the window, it is the interior trim (i think), I have tried unscrewing the trim screws and screwing them in a bit tighter, but it hasn't worked

I have also got leaks coming through the wing mirrors, can anyone help?

Cheers!

Hi Andrea,
The leaking mirrors are quite standard (mine is the same) I'm afraid, but there are quite a few cures if you look through the archives.
Can't help you with the doors but these guys are great and someone will be along very shortly :-)

Hi Andrea,

how old is your car? The difficulty opening the door could be due to poor window alignment: the glass may be sticking up a little too far, and sticking on the rubber soft top seal.

Rattles can be all sorts of things. On older cars, the channels themselves rattle. I think there is more on this on Dieter's web site - yup, found it, some detailed instructions by Spyros: http://www.mgfcar.de/window/window_rattle.htm

This rattle comes near your right ear - mine suffers from this too - I'm just waiting until I actually have time to completely strip the door down, install new speakers, fix the rattling window gude and then re-adjust the windows and wind cheeters, replace the water splash membrane etc etc to properly complete the job! That lot will probably take close to 6hrs per side... gulp. One for the warmer dryer months me thinks.

Rob, The car is Year 2000 W reg. The poor window alignment sounds about right i think. Looking at it, it is the right handside of the window which seems to be getting stuck.

The rattle though??? If i put my hand in the small gap between the end of the door (when the door is closed) and the other bit (sorry not really that technical am i?), it stops rattling?? Which led me to believe that it was the interior trim which wasn't screwed in properly.

Do you mean the interior door trim Andrea?

You could try some felt 'packing pieces' to see if you can remove the rattle. Not really had rattling door cards on my car though, so can't comment from experience.

This could be a broken window stop...sounds similar to symptoms experienced on my TF recently. This is a DIY fix, if reasonably competent, or dealer will do it in about an hour

Just read the DIY article on Dotcomoff about window stops. Do you think this is the cause as wouldn't my "F" have the mark 3 window stops? Do they still break?

Andrea

Did your door suddenly become hard to open or was it a gradual thing...
If the stop has broken you would only notice once you'd opened and closed the window... the glass would go up too far and jam in the seal on the roof.
Mine went while I had the hood down and confused the hell out of me.
You could try slightly lowering the window a quick stab on the button( 5 or 10mm )until you have time to fix it.

The rattle could be the bits of the window stop scudding about in the door.

Andrea,I guess that my TF had the latest stops...and yes, the drivers door one broke! so it may be worth checking anyway
