MG MGF Technical - Easter HGF?? Help
I hope others had a better Easter weekend than me. I had just over taken a couple of cars in my 98 VVC, changing up into 3rd approx 7000rpm when she drops onto 3 cylinders with a cloud of black smoke and i strong petrolly smell. Prase to the AA only took them 10 mins to get to me. After checking all the plugs, no 3 was dripping in unburnt fuel, also running out of the exhaust. A compression check on no 3 showed 75 psi. So my baby was transported on a flat bed back to my local MGR dealer. Does this sound like another dreaded HGF or could it be worse? There were no strange sounds eminating from the engine only a bad misfire no high oil or water temps and my wife says it had been using a lot of fuel in the past week. Any help would be greatly recieved. Thanks. Iain. |

Sounds like a burnt inlet valve to me. Are you using 95 or 98 octane fuel ? Mike |

Not the usual HGF symptons - unburnt fuel on one cylinder only sounds more like an ignition problem, had it blown its plug? Ted |

Mike, it was using 95 at the time, but have been using optimax 98 quite a lot in recent months. Ted, The AA chap swapped the plug but it still misfired. All cylinders were recieving a good spark. Before the misfire the engine was running really well. Thanks. Iain. |

could be a faulty injector throwing in too much fuel to burn, this will only show up in one cylinder |
