MG MGF Technical - ECU replacement?
Hi, our MGF VVC 1999 has had its front cooling fan on all the time recently even in very cold weather. I don't want the fan motor to burn out, so got it looked at. A local garage said that the fan and sensor check out OK, but it might be a fault with the ECU. My question is, do other Rover ECUs work with the MGF (after minimal labour) or do i need a particular model number? Will a 1.8 K series ECU work with my VVC or do i need a specific type? Appreciate any comments. Thanks, Tony |

first guess says that the garage don't know what they are talking about and the ECU is fine. ECU's hardly ever fail, but most people don't understand them so they pull it out, reprogram a new one and find the fault is still there 600/800GBP later. clean up the sensor plug with contact cleaner (spray) and closely check that the wiring is not chaffed Check the relay is good If this fails replace the sensor (20GBP 5 minutes) |

Thanks Will, do i need to remove the engine cover to get to this sensor. I've read somewhere it's a little brown sensor/plug on the passenger side, nr the exhaust manifold. Is that right please? Thanks again |

Yes, have a look here. http://www.mgfcar.de/coolant_sensor_change/index.html |

To answer your original question - no, you would need to find an ECU from another MGF with similar options. |

I'd say that all advice is fine. I once had an ECU fail in a Jeep Cherokee, but that meant the car did not start or run at all! Other than that, an ECU can't fail. Denis, 2004 TF 135 |
