MG MGF Technical - electric mirrors,is it possible???

i,ve got the instrument surround complete with switch,is it a possible upgrade to electric mirrors on an early mgf ??? thanks........
m e johnson

Sure to be possible, but how easily depends on whether the mirror wiring harness can be sourced as a separate part. Wouldn't be too hard to make your own though, splicing it in might be fiddly but not too complicated - no relays needed.

Mel,

I was looking at this a few weeks ago, talking to Victoriam she thought that it took the best part of an hour or so for them to fit the wiring etc. In my case I decided that it wasn't worth the hastle as the colour coded surround etc, off my manual mirrors wasn't a direct swap hence I would have to respray the new electric mirrors (which I couldnt be bothered with)

To be honest if I didn't have electric mirrors I don't think that I would bother fitting them. Once you adjusted them it's normally a very long time before you do it again.
David Clelland

The answer is yes - and Brown and Gammons et al all provide electric mirror kits.

Where these things come into their own (thanks Neil for pointing this out to me!) is when there are more than one driver for the car. Adjusting the drivers mirror is easy, but reaching over for the passenger side is a bit of a pain...

It is a shame that they don't provide a 'fold flat' option for parking in London though: that would have saved me a few pennies over the years! LOL

thanks all,i,ll let you know how i get on....

Or when the mirror is turned while parking to take care of curbs and alloys.
Erik

My SO and I are very different height wise but we never bother adjusting the left side mirror. I would not bother. Unless of course you want to stop the handles falling off!
Neil Courtney

Neil,

Mirror handles falling off?
Mine did and I fixed it!

The handle is held on by 2 square shaped plastic clips which are supposed to hold onto the square metal rod which has a small ridge on either side.
You will notice that the clips are splayed apart somewhat.

Take off the handle, blow hot air from a hair dryer onto the clips and while the plastic is hot use a pair of bull nose pliers and GENTLEY squeese the two clips together. Let it cool down while you keep pressure on and this will permanently reshape the clips closer together. When you put the handle back on it will "click" into place and should stay on as you would expect.

HTH.

Cheers,
Branko.

to late, they are broken off :-(
O Sander

They only fell off every 6 months or so, so was not a biggy anyway. With the TF now it is no longer a problem. Good tip though.

>to late, they are broken off :-(

Use a piece of shrink hose.
Push the lever on a similar dimension square shape metal shaft.
Shrink the hose down, let cool down and cut the hose lenght back to the length of the broken pegs.
Remove the shaft and push the lever with pre-formed shrink hose on the dorr mirror shaft.

Did this with my old MGF.

I often use the fold IN rather than FLAT option when parking in tight spaces. Manual I know but better than nowt. Always forget to fold out again before strapping in. Electric fold would be great.
JohnP

Fold flat is an option on the Rover 75/ZT John. Now if some enterprising soul were to figure out a way to get those mirrors to fit, now that would be interesting! I happen to think that the shape of these mirrors would work pretty well on the MGF - and perhaps on the TF too?
