MG MGF Technical - Electrical Problem Help!

Got into the F this morning to come to work, noticed that the clock had stopped & the radio didn't come on OK a fuse maybe. But the boot lid warning light was also stuck on & the car can no longer be double locked.

Suggestions (I am hoping you are going to tell me it is just a fuse) please

Cheers

Well to start it is a fuse, but also if you look at the boot hinge where the wiring loom passes into the boot you will find the wires have become snagged and rubbed thru the insulation, this is now grounding on the body. Solution is black tape and moving the loom so it doesn't rub.

Is that a good answer?

Will let you know after lunch!! Thanks Will.

Fuse Sally.

Lil green monster fully functioning again, it was just a fuse. (Slight panick about big repair bill led me to check that the signs didn't mean anything more ominous!) Checked the wiring loom in the boot to be on the safe side, everything fine there. Only prob now, finding the radio code.......

Thanks for the reassurance folks.

Sally,

Don't be surprised if the fuse blows again.

There are probably some fraid wires in the loom.

The fuse goes for a reason!

that thought had crossed my mind so I (we) will be keeping an eye on it, any other suggestions as to common places where the freying / problem might occurr, as I mentioned the place where the loom enters the boot was fine.

Centre console, a replacement radio sometimes leads to trapped wires.

Loose boot or bonnet light as well.

I don't know if this will make any difference but, we had the steering wheel replaced during the service. We bought a new wheel with out airbag & the airbag from the original wheel was swopped out. Could this be the cause of the short?

Should have mentioned this one earlier perhaps!

Cant think of anything in the wheel which has 'purple power'

The boot loom can look fine Sally but you can only confirm this by untapeing the wire harness where it has to withstand all the bending.

Even then the copper core of one of the wires can have fractured and still be hidden inside its outer plastic cover. You'll spot this by its limp appearance.

To have blown the fuse tho' you'd expect to find two or more exposed copper wires.

OK @ Home now, definately something amiss, the fuse replaced @ lunch time blew on the journey home, fella checked every fuse and again changed the one that blew. Checked the boot loom, all lights, everything mentioned here pretty much, all 'seemed' fine. Started the car again & the fuse blew straight away.

Does this give any more clues or am I looking at saying bye bye to my holiday savings!? ;-(

Scratch that last post, on considering the situation my fella realised that @ the time them fuse had blown the boot had been / was indeed open. There in (we hope) lies the problem. So Will et al, you were spot on. thanks as always.
