MG MGF Technical - Electronic Speed Sensor Removal
Hi all Recently bought a late 99 MPi (MY2000 I think), and now the speedo is acting up by stopping intermittently. First happened last Sunday driving back from Manchester, no speed indication for an estimated 20 miles, no odometer either. It stopped woking again this morning, and was still the same this evening, to the point where PAS stopped working also. Pulled the plug off the sensor to find green (verdrigis) on the contacts. I tried cleaning the contacts as best I could which seemed to restore the speedo but only a very short period, like one tenth of a mile. The lack of space doesn't help much. Can the sensor be removed easily? Has anybody had a similar problem, and how was it solved? Is the sensor a cheap or expensive replacement part? Thanks Steve |

Do you have a mechanical or digital odometer ?? viz. Do you have a mechanical or electronic problem. Geoff F. |

In case for the mechanical gear part http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/6291.htm or the hall-type sensor from VIN 511059 on http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/1854.htm I think it's not a difficult works to change, but see for small parts and gasket. Good light required and clean the sensor locacion from any mud before you undo the small fixture plate. HTH Dieter |

Dieter, Thanks for the info. Geoff, The problem appears to be electrical, most likely a corroded plug & socket arrangement, because I can get the speedo to work but only intermittently. I'm looking to take the sensor out so I can get at the contacts more easily. Probably a job for the weekend. Steve |
