MG MGF Technical - Emergency program for motormanagment

Does the motormanagment(of a MGF) have a emergency program when something is wrong with the motor or exhaust?
And if yes, what is the effect? less rpm or another power table?

Best regards,

Yes, the engine management system (MEMS - or Modular Engine Management System) does have a "fail safe" mode - which usually involves retardation of the ignition map and in turn reduced power. If the engine is a VVC, then the warmer cam map is disabled - again meaning less power.

Hope this helps Dide.

+ over-richening (choke) and fan running if you have a temp sensor failure

Oke thanks,

I think my MGF VVC is doing that on the moment.
Reduced power on all fronts and very noticeable when its getting around 3000/4000 rpm.
Its hard getting it above 5000 rpm.
No tractive power at all.
Is he also running this program when something is really wrong with the exhaust? Its very noisy when I step full on the gas.(Noisy but no power as normal at all!)

I think an analysis like this woun't bring you much further.
(the next quest of us would be: *what kind of noise, .... or similar*)

Anyway, fail safe mode is IMO forced to the ECU if any of the several sensors fails.

Fails due to broken mechanical part or other failure due to broken wire connection, short circuit or gone sensor.

description here, but only a few about the VVC related sensors.

Most easy DIY works is checking all sensor side and ECU connector wires by disconnect/re-connecting. If you have the skills then measure the sensor resistance *static*.

I'd start with the cam shaft sensor (VVC only)

noisy exhaust and big lack of power especilly at high flow sounds like the cat has broken up and is cloging the exhaust. Always check the obvious mechanicals before blaming the electrics !

Always tell the doctor the symptoms, not ask for symptoms and try to match them to your problem :-)

Thanks for reply('s)!!

I will check both, mechanical(exhaust) and the related electrics.
I will comeback if have found something!

Dide,

Check the flexi-pipe section of the exhaust. It is low and can be broken easily if you hit something in the road. When damaged it makes a hell of a noise and reduces power noticeably.

I smashed mine on the kerbs at Brands Hatch :-)
