MG MGF Technical - Engine + G/box weight
Does anyone know the wet weight of an engine with and without transmission? As a winter project, I've thought about getting a used engine and gearbox with a view to refurbishing "as new". Obviously an engine stand which can revolve would be jolly useful - I believe these can be had for £100 or less. I realise I'd need to hire a hoist to get the complete lump onto the stand and again to get the gearbox off and back on again. And once more to drop the entire unit onto a subframe. Clearly knowing the weights I'm dealing with will help me buy/hire the right handling equipment. What kind of mounting options does a K series have - on the side of the block, just one end or both? The engine famously weighs a mere 100Kg :-) |

Yes - when MGR replaced a K series under warranty for me some years ago, I remember being staggered that it arrived at the dealers in basically what was a cardboard box, which was then moved around the workshop with ease :) |

The entry-level engine stands from Clarke et al will be more than capable of handling a K Series, even if it has ancillaries/exhaust/etc still attached. The engine mounts on the stand using 4 of the bellhousing-to-block bolt holes, so the gearbox & clutch need to be removed. Some of the holes are not perpendicular to each other so having some M10 & M12 threaded bar and a pack of chunky washers is a good plan so you can make bespoke bolts, especially important where you're bolting into blind holes and want to use all the available thread to ensure a strong fixing. An engine hoist/crane can be bought, used for as long as necessary, and sold on for minimal outlay, so hiring a crane may not be the most cost-effective option. I'd recommend a 2 tonne version, as that will be strong enough to raise & suspend the back of the car while the subframe/engine assembly is positioned underneath. There are other methods, but that I've found to be the easiest by far. Engine stands can be found secondhand for £20 odd, little benefit in buying new as so many people only need one once. The PG1 gearbox weighs approx 45kg, so manual handling not usually a problem. One other tool I'd recommend is a MAPP gas torch, much hotter than a butane blowlamp and can make unbolting the exhaust manifold a less frustrating experience ;o) |

Thanks to all for the information. All I have to find now is an engine to play with! A VVC is preferred, one without clackety clack mech's! Jeff |

Try Andy Jennings, He is on the south coast and supports this forum by advertising on here. I think a good VVC is £400, tempting or what? |

Might do that Stan. I've been to his place several month's ago, he's certainly got plenty of parts available - both Andy and Christian are very helpful. Jeff |
