MG MGF Technical - Engine bay grill
Hi Guys, Does anyone see a problem if I remove the engine bay grill. It seems an uneccesary part. Might it make for better bay cooling as well as a weight reduction. I realise the boot outlet vents might be the main restriction to air flow. Is there a safety reason for this grill? Thanks everybody Chris |

wont make any diffrence to cooling, and it's quite light - but if it offends you then pull it, it serves only as somthing to stop you dropping stuff into the engine. |

The engine bay grill was the first thing I threw away. Keeping an eye on the coolant bottle level becomes much easier without it. |

Never ever found the grill a problem over the lasy 8 plus years and it is somewhere to stand things whilst loading the boot. Ted |

IMO it's "useful".... ;) 1. If coolant escapes through the expansion tank cap due to boiling and over pressure.. The right plastic cover protects the boot lid from getting splashed with coolant from below. 2. echo Ted. 3. it's rear fixture brackets fill some holes in the bodyworks 4. nice option for DIY works @ long boring winter days ... swap the hinge http://www.mgfcar.de/service_flap/index.htm .. I get my coat. Have a nice week :o) Cheers Dieter |

Tf's have a grill but not the plastic covers so at least you can see the coolant bottle everytime you open the boot (MGR good thinking or just another bit they deleted? :)) |

And MGR saved even more money by not fitting the rubber rings on the 2 boot lid bolts. Value Engineering used to be making the same product cheaper by improving your manufacturing techniques. MGR definition seems to be to make the product cheaper by cheapening it by taking all the nice bits off and selling it as thw same product. We know of many "savings" on the TF from the Hydragas suspension, stainless exhaust, seat rear pockets, 2nd horn, front compartment light but what worries me is what has been removed/cheapened that we do not know about. Clarkson calculated the fuel saving by shaving off your mousetache. Maybe you should ask him what the performance improvement would be by removing this grill. How many nanoseconds off the 0 to 60 ?? In reality, it is for safety so that your inquisitive young lad does not put his hand down when the engine is running. Geoff F. |

Hi, So all you chaps have a grill? I have to take my own stove if I want anything served up hot. But if you're all going to remove your grills then we'll be on even footing. I do find that after grilling my bacon (soft, ummmm...) if I place it on the F's engine bay grille it keeps warm whilst the tea is mashing. Or brewing, depending on how you were dragged up. >In reality, it is for safety so that your inquisitive >young lad does not put his hand down when the engine is >running. he'd need bloody long arms to manage that! |

Clarkson is not worried about mpg, global warming , indeed anything that is not JC after buying his GT40 which he managed to get 4 yes 4 mpg. mike |

>>Tf's have a grill but not the plastic covers It varies from car to car. My 2003 TF has the Grill flaps and the luggage net, but still only 1 horn and no bonnet light LOL |

Hi all, On my 2003 TF160 I got the engine bay grill but no cover over the coolant tank which I think is a bonus as I can check the level everytime I open the boot. Did'nt get a net though unlike in my old F. Same for me on the horn and the bonnet light too !! Tony |

Started with the F with grill and both flaps... it's the way they arrive from the dealer. Removed both flaps: if it doens't help cooling it won't hurt it either. And it easier to keep an eye on the expansion bottle Removed a part of the grill as it was needed after the installation of the new ECU. |

Steve said <<My 2003 TF has the Grill flaps and the luggage net, but still only 1 horn and no bonnet light>> My 2002 TF has grill flaps - very useful for standing handbag or coffee when loading boot - grill net, I like SF's extra nets, and two horns! not sure about bonet light though. |

One should note that the left hand grill cover protects a very expensive bit of kit...the mems unit !! I have heard of people washing car and cauasing damage to the engines/ cars brain. don |

Hi, OK, I tried irony, but there wasn't a flicker of response. It was almost as if I didn't exist. So I'll be blunt. It's grille, grille, grille, the bloody word's spelled grille. Grille, grille, grille! For Heaven's sake, it's grille. How many more times do I have to say it, it isn't grill, or any other stupid variation on the word, it's grille, Grille, GRILLE! Gordon Bennett. Regards, Kes. |
Kes |
but you can use it to keep the chinese warm on the way home - is it a grill then? |
Will Munns |
Kes, irony not lost, I chuckled. :) |

Don, Thanks for the warning about getting the MEMS wet whilst washing the car. I can see a hose might spray some water onto it. Should it not survive a bit of water. A car is a very extreme environment by nature. Chris |

well the one i'd heard about had been jet washed I beleive, hee hee cant beleive my spelling....grill :-) don |
