MG MGF Technical - engine cut out during driving
the car engine cut out whilst driving the other day. I thought it was a major problem but the second time it happened I thought that it might be my knee accidently moving the ignition key to the off position. Is this a reasonable explanation??? It seemed to start ok when I turned the key. |

When the engine cutout where all the warning lights on? This has been reported before on the BBS, although not sure what the cure is. What age, model and mileage is your car? I think that it would quite difficult to turn off the ignition with your knee. Tom |

Malcolm, I am sure many others here will give you their opinions on this, there are many possible causes.I had a similar problem a few years ago, turned out to be faulty ECU. A similar problem also occured just after I fitted my CD bootchanger - rerouting the cable cured it that time! I know the problem with these intermittant faults is that it is hard to get the garage to check it - for my ECU problem I had to wait and put up withthe problem for a few months until it was happening really frequently! Good Luck, Jason H |

<What age, model and mileage is your car?> vvc 97 41k. I was in a bit of a panic when it happened as I was driving on the M way but I think all the red lights came up. I know when I turned the key forward the car engine cut in again. I'll try and compose myself if there is a next time and take a close look at the panel. |

Unconnected I know but an amusing story. A boss of mine some years ago was driving his Peugeot on the motorway when a warning light lit up on the dash. Not knowing what the warning light was he rang the dealer from his car to ask for an explanation. "Where are you now sir?" the dealer asked. "I'm in the outside lane of the M1" my boss replied. "OK Sir, take your foot off the accelerator and pull over to the hard shoulder now". My boss complied and then asked "Why, what's the problem?". "You have no brakes sir" was the reply and sure enough, he was right. Malcolm, Maybe you have a worn out ignition switch which is not making a very good connection. Try starting the engine and fidlle gently with the key to see if it causes the same problem while at a standstill. Bruce |
