MG MGF Technical - engine fan not coming on please can anyboby help

i have changed the ambient air sensor and still not working would like some advice if possiable please
p wright

The brown temperature sensor on the 'engine elbow' controls the radiator fan. They commonly fail but more often fail 'on' or intermittent. Have you looked at the fuse F6 under the bonnet and upgraded it to 20A?(assuming you have an F, but I think TFs were the same) HTH

Thanks for that, are the coolant sensors linked through the ECU with the engine bay fan, or is the engine
a stand along unit along with its sensor Regards

I think we're talking about the engine bay cooling fan? Is the fan getting power? Does the fan turn over easily?

Annoyingly this fan is really tucked down in the engine bay. So much easier to get at with no engine in there! LOL

I don't think mine's worked for years, but I've not been anywhere really hot, so I can't say I've missed it!
Mike Cunningham

Fan operation is controlled by the engine management (MEMS), based on ambient temperature (sensor I think you've checked already). Coolant temperature doesn't effect its operation.

Mike, I suspect a lot of these fans simply seize. And since we don't live in a particularly hot climate, their lack of function is not that critical IMO. :o)

Oops sorry for earlier post. Try Dieter's site for sensor ohmic values of AA Temp sensor (I can't from work). Otherwise does the fan itself work anyway as Rob suggests; and least likely connectors on ECU or loom damage between sensor, ECU and fan.

I had my MGF for 2 years and in all that time the engine bay fan was seized solid. Because it is so hard to get at, I ignored it and never had any over-heating issues.
Mike Howlett

I've only noticed the engine fan coming on twice - last year during a hot spell and then only after some enthusiastic driving!

As a matter of interest I looked at mine yesterday. The sensor has a resistance varying on temperature - Dieter reckons 2k05 cold; mine was 1k3 at about 70c after a run. With the plug disconnected and the ignition on, the fan runs - so very easy to test.
Charless

HI Charless,

Just to get this right - to test if the engine fan is working you simply disconnect the sensor plug and turn the ignition on?
Chris Bond

Yes! See Dieter's site:http://www.mgfcar.de/index.htm
go down the left hand index to 'sensoren' and he gives lots of sensor check values including the AA ones.
Charless

Thanks,

Checked mine and it works!
