MG MGF Technical - Engine Hesitation

My 1996 MGF during idling the engine rev. goes up and down (not steady) during acceleration at pick up speed it hesitate but once it is cruising it's OK
Spark plugs and leads had replaced with new one the sympton still exist
Can someone help? Also how to read the fault code from the car without the machine?
D Cho

You can buy a plug-in fault code reader and re-set unit from a number of on-line suppliers.

You might want to check the throttle body. These are made of plastic and can warp slightly, causing the butterfly valve to stick.

Good luck!

I had the same problem, it was cured by removing multi plug from the ECU mounted on the left hand side of the engine compartment and spraying the connectors with WD40.
( and of course replacing)

Thank you all for the advise, I have tried to clean the connectors, no improvement.
Also bought a ODB2 checker (pls see attached picture) and it doesn't work with this car.
Can someone tell me where I can buy one (OBD2 checker)for this MGF, my family live in UK so they can get me one and send it out to me.
Is there a special ISO no. for the ODB2 checker to look out for?
Any advise for this repair is very much appreciated.

Of course, it could be one of 1001 different things - but if it helps I had a 1997 F with the same problem and it turned out to be a faulty oxygen sender. The dealer at the time for some reason was unable to identify this from the ECU diagnostics, though.

I think I am right in saying that there is no OBD available for the early *F*s - you have to use the dealers checking equipment.

Correct me if I am wrong but I have never found one for our 1996 *F*

A T300+ does work with Rover MGF OBD1. Google it. You can buy from China.
