MG MGF Technical - Engine indicator light flashing

Hello everyone - I'm new to F ownership - (did run a BGT some years ago but had a couple of French diesels in the last ten years). This is the first petrol engine car I've run which has engine management stuff in it so I'm trying to update on all this modern techy stuff - this BBS is a real boon!!!

Anyway my problem - this morning on my way to work (07.30 and cold) the "Engine Indicator" (I think this is what the handbook called it - it's the amber light with an engine symbol on the left of the dashboard) light started flashing. I was 1.7 miles into a 10 mile journey driving steadily on country roads before hitting a dual carriageway. Water temperature was just coming up to normal, oil temp was still on 60. The light flashed about 4 or 5 times and then went out but it flashed again about a mile later and this time flashed for about 15 seconds. Rest of journey was uneventful. The car seems to drive OK apart from the flashing light.

Car is an absolutely standard F 1.8i registered in September 2001. I bought it from a dealer in September 2002 with 12500 miles on the clock and its now got 13700 miles on it. Can anyone tell me what this light does, is it flashing indicating anything serious and will I do any damage by continuing to drive. The car is still covered by the warranty but my dealer is 20 miles away and getting there is a real hassle.

Any help at all appreciated.

Cheers, Bill.

Bill,
IIRC this means the ECU detected a fault, as it is amber and only flashed you should be safe to drive it to the garage and get it checked out at the earliest oppurtunity(sp). A read of the drivers manual should also tell you something similar.

It may be emissions, I think this light is the one that shows up if there is a cat fault.
It's still under warrenty right? take it to the dealer and slap it on the testbook, this will tell you for sure (and shouldn't cost you anything)

As Mike says Bill, best get your dealer check the car over for you.

BTW this is not a common 'fault' - I've not come across anyone reporting this light illuminating on the BBS before? I'd need acess to my handbook to figure out what it meant! LOL

Rob,

Your handbook is now with Tim!

I was not aware there was an engine ECU warning light, unless it changed on the later models.

Rob,

mine has light up one time... It was on a start a morning very cold. Engine ratttle for 20second at 1200 RPM then light goes on and I cut at 30s...

Restart engine and it was OK. Car was in car park for 3 weeks and oil has just gone on the bottom of the engine. Nothiong very importante said my dealer mecanics...

BTW, Cedric from swizerland has this warning light flashing on his throphy and it was a faulty ECU.
