MG MGF Technical - engine mount collapse
I had the bolt shear on the engine mount which let the motor down onto the sub frame. this stuffed the oil dipstick pipe and bent the drive shaft & possibly the cv joint. Any body got ideas on how much grief this is to do on a drive and anything to look out for? Any one know where i can get a copy of the relevant bits of a manual for this job? Its already cost me £300 to get the motor back where iot should be! The plus side is that i got the timing belt changed and retimed as part of the first repair lol |

Problem is upon looking this up in the manual it refers you back and forth. I suggest you check www.guidesrus.co.uk for a 15£ Rave CD. That will give you just about anything from mechanical to electrical schemes. Saves you the hassle in copying, mailing and what not. How did it come this far anyway. did you not torque the bolts up well enough? |

Sorry, just checked their website and it seems they stopped selling. i.e. this guy is only asking 3£ http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-Workshop-Manual-100-200-400-600-800-MGF-Mini_W0QQitemZ150008348320QQihZ005QQcategoryZ18429QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Thanks for the tip on the site. I think the reason it hit me was down to the prev owner when he had the engine out! did a good job on everything else but i could have checked i spose. I was suss on the brake disk being out of true so I cant say I had no warning. down to experience |

It is very easy to get "Japanese cross windings" on that bolt after an engine out job or cambelt change ! This will in time (plus help of bumpy roads)lead to fatigue to the bolt and total failure of that engine mount. Worst problem is to get the old bolt out as there is no room for any straight drilling and "pigtail" to get the remains out... Been there, done that, got the T-shirt ! |

Well I gave the bolts like 3-5 turns by hand to be sure I had the correct thread. But, I couldn“t make more than 3-5 turns on the bolts. which worries me a bit. |

There must be a torque setting for this somewhere! shame that the guy who did mine couldnt find it before mine broke. Stll im gonna have a look at sorting out the drive shaft tommorow. god what a life! |

here you go: 155 Nm but rest assure, the access to these bolt is limited, because of the restricted engine opening. You end up using a flexible bit on the socket. In this flexible part, a lot of torque is lost upon pulling. TBQH, I pulled with all the strenght I had (thought the flex would break) and could get upto the specified 155Nm. Hopes it all holds together. anyone experienced a similar problem? |

Well new drive shaft and cv joint fitted and my baby runs again. Only touched the inner boot and lots of bits fell out, you know needle rollers n stuff! It all came apart quite easily. Only real prob was getting the 32mm nut off the hub but I can recomend any tyre fitting place with air guns Chemex did mine nicely lol. If anyone out there wants to do theirs I would recomend having two people to make life easy but more than possible to do on a drive. dificulty rating ? say 7/10 |
