MG MGF Technical - EPAS

Hi to all F.ers

For the first time in allmost 3 months i started my beloved F todat, only to find out that the light for the PS was on, and stayed on.
What have gone wrong here?.
Can the reason be low power on the battery. It started on the last juices?.

Check the FAQ, but it could be due to high revs while stationary. That causes the EPAS to go into fail mode.

That is not a problem. A safety feature in fact.

Does the light stay on all the time now, or is it reset when you restrated the car?

Paul Nothard

Hi Paul,

Yes, the light stay on, allso at normal revs, aprox
950 rpm., and there is no PS on it at all, so very heavy to turn, saves the trip to the gym then, hmm.

It is either the problem that Paul highlighted - namely that the EPAS has gone into fail-safe, or it means that there is a poor electrical connection between the EPAS ECU and the wiring loom plugs.

If the former, it'll reset itself fairly quickly if you take the car for a quick drive around town.

If the latter, the warning lamp will remain on.

The way to deal with the latter problem is to remove the loom plugs from the ECU, spray a contact cleaner onto both the ECU terminals and into the plug, and reconnect everything back up. That should sort out 90% of problems.

Some pix on the EPAS ECU here - http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/epas_bypass.htm - which details Will's EPAS bypass circuit.

Now i am realy confused. When i got home tonight, i
started the little red thing, and a lot of noice came from the glovebox area for round 10 secs. Then silence
and the light stil on and no PS. A hour later, i started it again, same noise, but only for a couple of
secs, and of went the the light and the PS was working again, smile, but what has been wrong?

Thanks so much to Rob for the link. I am gooing
to give it some contactspray next weekend, just to be sure.
Rob, it would be nice to get your personal e-mail. I
feel it could come in handy from time to time.

Thanks for your help

Hmm, now this sounds like a problem that Bob was describing about 6 months ago. The noise may be the EPAS relays opening and closing.

Bob's car, like yours, gets laid up for longish periods without use - so there is more similarity there.

I *think* that the problem is likely to be contact related - so certainly worth going around all the connectors making sure they're all clean.

Kjeld, feel free to drop me an email: robert dot bell at ucl dot ac dot uk

Good luck!
