MG MGF Technical - EPAS sensor

I have a problem with my EPAS. It looks as if it maybe the sensor on the steering rack as occasionally there is no assistance when turning right. A quick flick of the wheel corrects it. The EPAS light never comes on.

Has anyone looked at that part, how does it work. Is it a simple contact or something more clever (a strain gauge)

Is it available as a seperate part (hopefully) and has anyone changed it on their car. It looks as if the fuse board obstructs the screws securing the metal cover over it.

Thanks

Keith

According to Rover the entire coloum has to be replaced. If I were you I'd pull the PAS fuse now, better to have no PAS than PAS which doesn't assist when you are expecting it. Also the failure is currently no help turning right, what if it becomes 'help turning left', no way would you be able to stop it.

Are you sure it is your EPAS ?

Now that I think of it I have the same problem sometimes when turning left. And last friday my car failed the MOT test because of to much play in some steering element of the left wheel. (sorry can't be more precisely)
Don't know what is wrong exactly, have to bring in the car tomorrow to get it fixed.

Also heard of someone who had the carpet (footmat?)pushing against the steering colomn.

Keith - have a look through the archives: sometimes similar problems can occur when the EPAS ECU connectors develop a problem - certainly cheaper to sort that out than replace an entire steering column!

One of the track rod ends, obviously.

Anyway, some pix of EPS are here

Not much help, though.
I'd check all connectors o the way from the sensor to the EPAS ECU. Disconnect, re-connect, may be they are bad contact.

*g, apolgy, written parallel. I use to need a bit longer ;)

i had the same problem, in the end it turned out to be a bad earth connection!
I suggest you check out this avenue 1st otherwise could end up costing.

Keith, The sensor is not available seperately, but a used one could be fitted to your column (it has been done with my old sensor!). However it would be easier just to fit a secondhand column though.
Before you try this I would suggest checking the connectors both on the column and the EPAS ECU for a secure fit, and also check all the individual pins to see if any are loose - I had that problem some years back and it caused my EPAS to turn full lock all by itself!.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the connectors (and give them a clean).
