MG MGF Technical - EPAS steering sensor

Ny F VVC (2000) still has poor steering asistance when turning right. I've cleaned the contacts on the EPAS ECU and so it's looking like the torque sensor may be at fault. The problem seems worse when the car warms up.

I am thinking of removing the torque sensor to see if there is anything I can see that would be causing the sensor to fail.

Has anyone removed the steering column torque sensor. If so, is there anything I should be aware of, before attempting it (like springs flying out, etc).

Thanks
Keith

Well, MG Rover DO NOT allow technicions to touch this sensor, rational being that if the ufck it up then the car will force you off the road !!!

When reassembleing _please_ use threadlock on _everything_ to make sure that it doesn't losten in time. Other than this warning I'm afraid I can be of no further help, sorry.

Keith,
Yes I have removed the torque sensor - quite easy, but there is little point - no contacts to clean and you cannot buy a replacement. The sensor is fixed with 2 bolts in slotted holes, the holes are then filled with a sort of glue, as long as you keep the glue intact you can refit the sensor in the same place, otherwise it can be turned using the slotted holes which presumably would vary the amount of assistance.

I experienced similar problems to you with my car sometimes having less assistance turning one way - symptoms got worse over a year or so, until etually the car was turning the other way all by itself! Turned out to be a loose pin in the one of the multi connectors - as the car got warm the pins were making/loosing contact.

I agree with Jason - your problem definitely sounds electrical Keith. How did you fix the loose pin in the multiplug Jason? Or did you simply replace the plug?
Rob Bell

Jason,

Would you happen to know which connector had the faulty pin(the EPAS ECU, or at the column).

Thanks
Keith

The faulty pin on mine was one of the ones into the EPAS ECU, but it could preseumably be any one! The damaged/faulty connector could be seen as such if it was disconnected and the pins looked at - it was obvious that one pin was bent/loose.
The conmnectors are not available seperately -Rover tried to sel me a whole new loom - so I got another connector 2nd hand, cut of the damaged one and connected the replacement.
