MG MGF Technical - Errrrr Help please!!!!
I went to start My MGF this morning and it coughed and sputtered away followed buy a pop which did nothing i might add! But it finaly started after more trying and a load of dusty smoke not thick black more sooty! Like it blew something out, My exhaust sounds alot worse now so maybe it was the last of the baffels or something but its not a problem cos im changing it for my cup exhaust this week! what im thinking is there seems to be something wrong but i have no idea where to start looking! its very wet and cold today and its been on quite a few short journeys recently...... could it be condensation in the engine? Cheers (Scared of more bills) Nick |

Condensation is white smoke Black is over rich blue is oily If you failed to start the engine once then it is _very_ hesitent to start the next turn, It could be that you managed to flood the engine. If the exhaust is dying inside then it is possible that a blockage caused the hesitantsey (more usual for a failing cat to do this) |

Yeah i can smell petrol and its drinking alot more than usual!? Also i have a hole the size of your fist in my exhaust which thank god is being replace this week!! Ok My Fiance now tells me it was a powdery blue smoke!!!!!!! Is this serious im starting to freak out here!!!! |
Nick Lewis |
If the cat is gone then it will smell of petrol for the first few minutes of running, but this will go away. If it is powdery blue then you might have lost a ring, but then you're replacing the pistons, rings and liners arn't you? |
Will Munns |
Yes i am replacing the lot but i didnt want to do it this month lol as its my only car at the moment untill my fiance gets hers back next month! If ive lost a ring i'll have to take her off the road now :o( I dont have a cat so i guess it must be a ring!! |
Nick Lewis |
Uh oh... :o( Can't add any more to what Will's said - but I guess as you'll be stripping down the engine very shortly, if anything untoward has happened, you'll know about it very soon... |
Rob Bell |
A compression test should tell you quickly if you have lost a piston ring. |
Steve Ratledge |
Agghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i really didnt need this right now :o( What will happen if it has lost a ring.... i have to drive it 10miles to my fiances dad's garage will i be alright to do so? |
Nick Lewis |
Yep, it will just use a little more oil. Do you have multiple throttle bodies? - if not then check the breather tubes are clear, if so then consider enlarging the catch tank. |
Will Munns |
Yes i do, Jenvey MTB's and i'll have a look at that! cheers Will your a star!!!! Steve thats a good idea i'll get that done at the garage today!!! I'll be back, .... bigger, better, more powerfull, more reliable............... just watch this space ;o) |
Nick Lewis |
Seems fine so i wont have to take her off the road just yet....... its all weird i dont understand whats up with it???????????????? |
