MG MGF Technical - Exhaust box tail trims

Help. My wifes MGF has lost one of the rear tail trims either in a parking knock or whatever. MG can supply a new one at £105 or a new rear box with trims at £325 both seem a bit heavy for a chrome tail pipe. Any good ideas as the car looks daft with just one pipe. Thanks in advance.

How old is the car? Spate of MY2000 cars losing their tail pipes. Later models do not have a stainless steel exhaust. So, if you have a later model the rear box may be on its way out. Might be time to consider a new sporty stainless steel job from one of the specialist suppliers.

There is currently a brand new silencer on Ebay:

Cut and paste the address above

David. The car is 2001 Steptoe and has only done 13K. Did you repace the whole unit on yours or is there some company who sell just the fins? or at least a look alike. Chris I looked up the silencer on ebay, thanks I will check the part number this morning it may be the answer. Thanks guys.

I've also got a Steptronic which has done 22K but touch wood my exhaust is still OK. The Mark I Fs had stainless steel exhausts and some early cars are still running on their original systems. However the Mark II (MY 2000) cars were fittrd with galvanised mild steel exhausts. I've heard of the tailpipes on one or two cars falling off when they were just over a year old. I'm not aware of any replacement finishers that you can fit other than the MG one shown here http://www.csmgf.dsl.pipex.com/darkside/exhausts/exhausts.htm However, these need the original ones to clip onto. Why not try Mike Satur, B & G etc. I don't tink that they are any dearer than MG but you get a better product.

That ebay pic doesn't look like a standard box - the tailpipes look round to me (unless this is a TF box).

I may be changing my exhaust soon; if you can wait a little while then you are welcome to have the finishers off my old one for the price of postage.

Colin, That is a very kind offer. I must say that I am no hurry to buy a whole new system just for the pretty bit at the end. I live in Camberley Surrey, so may not be that far away from you.I have added the email so you can contact me. Thanks. Tony.

Not sure of the identity of the manufacturer of that exhaust system on ebay - it's possibly an early Motobuild system. Either way, it is only suitable for pre-2000 MGFs as you can see that the flange is behind the backbox (to meet the cat) rather than to one side the box...

Previously there have been a number of ebay sales for just the polished stainless steel end section (SMC Trading), which sold around £25.00. The ad did point out that they cost £40.00 new. If this is the part your after it might be worth holding on and keeping a look out for more sales!

Simon,

That's the finishers that I was referring to above. They fit over the existing smaller finishers and I don't know if they would fit if one was missing. Going price on Ebay tends to be about £40 for the pair. I paid £39 + £5 carriage when I bought mine.
