MG MGF Technical - Exhaust Lifespan

Hi All,

Just a quick question, I have a 2001 Y reg MGF, 39k on the clock. Car still under warranty.

Yesterday one of the exhaust end pipes fell off :-S, as it had completly rusted...it was just the bit that sticks out the back... would this be an acceptable lifespan for the exhaust on a new car...?
Dan

My exhaust was 5 years old when I replaced it, it was still working, had both its trims intact but I upgraded to a sports system. I therefore think 2 years is a little soon for an exhaust to rust through and I would suspect a weak area where it had been wealded may have been the cause.

Dont suppose there is anything I can do about it now though....

Guess its time to pay out a bit more cash :-S

Dan / Chris.

The earlier Fs had a stainless steel exhaust (albeit of a rather poor quality) and the system did last for a reasonable length of time. Unfortunately, the newer cars (I think that it started with the MY2000 cars) are fitted with a galvanaised mild steel exhaust and I know of one or two 2000 and 2001 cars that the tailpipes have already fallen off. So, Dan I'm sorry to tell you that this is not unusual and you now have an excuse to buy a new sportier exhaust.

Dan drop me a line and tell me where abouts in Strathclyde you live.

Dan. Same thing happened to me!
2001 MPi, exhaust trim on offside fell off after 18months ownership & (if my memory serves me correctly) about 18k on the clock.
I tried in vain to get it replaced by MGR but to no avail.
Ended up spending £275 on a SS exhaust from 'Drivers' in Glasgow, at St. Georges Cross.
IMO looks & sounds better, plus the knowledge of a lifetime warranty with it.

My 96 MGF is still on its original exhaust, cat and down pipe. Its making a weird shrieking noise above 4000 rpm on wide open throttle but still going strong. I think the noise may be a leak in one of the gaskets. The shrouding around the cat (Jap model) is coming apart so I have purchased a new complete system, to fit soon. I reckon almost seven years on one system is the longest I ever had on a car. The new system is galvanised and the tail trims are shorter in length.

mmm does that mean the replacement MG exhausts for pre 2000 F's are mild steel? My 5 year old VVC is off to have the exhaust replaced tomorrow under warranty, so I have a sorta personal interest in this one :)

Colin,

I quote from the 2001 sales brochure:

"The galvanised steel exhaust, with two bright tailpipes, hints at the MGF's high performance potential, while emitting the minimum of harmful exhaust gases"

The only thing is that the later exhaust systems have a slightly different back box. So, I'm not sure if a replacement for an earlier system will be as described above.

Dan.
Check out the "exhaust" thread on the general board.
A new exhaust could be yours for the cost of P&P from Surrey.

What is your typical driving time. My mother who makes massive trips to the supermarket and local shops..about 5 mins in the car. ALways gets thru lots of exhausts. Due I believe to the water vapour in the exhaust not having enough time to fully evaporate and corroding the pipe because of the short journey times.
My F is nearly 8 years old and still has the original exhaust, thou rust is evident....oh dear am I going to have to buy a sports one????

<<oh dear am I going to have to buy a sports one???? >>

No. You could buy a cheap one. I just bought a complete system, flexipipe, cat and silencer inc gaskets for £361 inc vat. Havent' fitted it yet so can't comment on the performance.
