MG MGF Technical - Exhaust manifold
Will an exhaust manifold from MGF Trophy 160, fit a 1998 1.8i ?? |
Steve |
Nope, don't think so, the design was changed in 2001. Check out the diagrams on Paul Lathwell's site: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dotcomoff/ and then the "MGF / TF FAQ" link and "exhausts" in the drop-down menu. You can also register as a member and check the archives, you should find useful stuff on the subject if you seacrh for "exhaust manifold". |

Satir does a better manifold for the 1.8 doesnt he? |

Steve, What is yor reason for changing the exhaust manifold. The Trophy item will be no better than the one you already have. There are a new 4-2-1 manifolds on the market the Mike Satur item specifically suited to the MGF if it is performance you are looking for. Alternaively you could fettle your own manifold as commented in another thread on this 'Technical forum'. If you intend to replace the manifold just be aware that the Lambda sensor will not be too happy to re-locate to its new home. It will beed a lot of persuading (read: drilling, grinding and swaring at!) Also at some I believe that the stud pattern changed so watch out for that. Tim |

I was looking to fettle doen the existing exhaust but did not want to be without the car, so I had seen a cheap exhaust manifold from MGF Trophy 160. So I was going to buy that, do the fettleing work on that one. Then do a straight swap. But I am not keen to mess around with sensors etc I have asked the vendor if it is a 4 or 6 bolt arrangement to fix it to the next exhaut section (no answer yet). Cheers Steve |

Steve - the answer to your question "will a Trophy 160 exhaust manifold fit my '98 MPi" is maybe. Sorry this is a bit vague, but there are two versions - I think - of Trophy exhaust manifold: a 4-stud and a 6-stud manifold (the difference is at the down-pipe flange) More detail can be seen in this image: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/exhaust_pix/exhaust_20002001_overlay.jpg where the red coloured system is the exhaust system as fitted to your '98 car - and any 'phase 1' SVA-homologated Trophy 160, versus the post 2001 MGF and 'phase 2' fully homologated trophy. The only fool-proof way of knowing the difference is the number of studs. If the manifold you can buy cheaply has 6, then you'll also need the down pipe (the bit with the flexi-pipe section), but if it has 4-studs, then it is a simple, straight swap. Hope this helps :o) Let us know how you get on :o) |
