MG MGF Technical - Exhaust Manifolds.....Which one??
Hi All, Have decided that my next investment is going to be a manifold in January but which one to get? My head is spinning! I've gone right through the archives and the list of available ones seems endless! From the mass produced such as Janspeed to the newly developed like Powerspeed, I just can't decide! So any reviews from people would be really appreciated as at the moment I'm just going to pull a name from a hat! :) Thanks, Kris. |

Kris I would put Mike Saturs' Piper at the top of the list. It's very well made and has the heatshield mounting points. Certainly will be my next purchase. |

There are plenty on the market - mainly for the Elise - but a word of warning: many Elise systems will not fit the F, because there is considerably less clearence between the bulk head/ engine and subframe. The Piper system sounds to be excellent - but I haven't tried it. I have a two-part system, which makes it noiser, but it does work terrifically well. Will be off to a RR to see exactly how well some time in the new year. |

I recently went for the a new Janspeed system front to back with there 4-2-1 manifold. Initially was going down the Powerspeed road, even gave them a deposit but was so disgusted with the service and seeing the problems others were having decided to stick with the tried and tested Janspeed First impressions are very very good Like you say Rob the RR day will be really interesting !! Stu PS. I am talking to Quaife at the moment !! :-) |

How much are Quaife talking about Stu? The Getrag line of enquiry went cool when the unit on eBay went over 200 quid. :o( |

Are you sitting down Rob ? About 4k fitted in existing bell housing Going to discuss with TS and possibly look to purchase another bell housing so as I can leave the car running whilst its being done, I wish I'd never driven Techspeed's car with that low ratio box in now !! hehehe So much better but just too noisy cruisin on the motorway Quaife are talking about 4 weeks turn around depending on work load. Mulling it over now.. Is it financially logical ? NO Is it probably worth it ? NO Will it put the biggest grin on my face every time I drive it ? OH YES !!!!! Problem is there doesn't seem to be too many other alternatives to consider With the recent new engine and a new gearbox the car should certainly be good for another 5 years happy motoring Going to see how expensive Christmas turns out and seriously consider it for the new year.. I am very very tempted Stu |

Rob, Noisy is fine with me. :) Which system is it that you have? Did you notice any obvious improvement, etc... Kris |

ARRRRRGGGGG THE DARKSIDE ARRRRRRRRGGG DON'T DO THIS TO ME!! I've been having horrid flashbacks to the 4-2-2 TT extreme headers. Designed at the time of the TT FXtreme mk1, but never developed through to completion. I dont even know if it is possible to do a 422 system with that 1st sensor there, everything else would work though.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ARRRRARARARAGG THE TORTURE! |

Stu, that is the cost that I'd heard too - I had hoped that it would be cheaper by now, but clearly not. Shame. The gearbox, let alone the engine (!) is going to be worth more than the car - but there's no point looking at this logically now! LOL Let me know what decision you take. I'll try and find a cheaper route, but won't hold my breath. Kris, I had the manifold fitted before having the cylinder head ported. In fact I wasn't really expecting much of a difference, but actually noticed an immediate improvement from the moment I pulled away from Dave's premises. Seriously more torque almost everywhere - I was able to pull 25mph in fourth without any complaint from the engine at all. Astonishing. Dave Livingstone and I both have have this system - it hasn't been an entirely problem free experience: that slip joint being the main culprit so far. But I think that the problem is now solved: the manifold is now bracketed to redundant bolt holes on the sump that keeps the whole system rigid to the flexi-pipe flange (the flexi is replaceable bolt on - which is a very nice feature). Since then, the cylinder head has been ported, and I am running slightly warmer TF135 cams, so some of that awsome torque has moved elsewhere in the rev range. Having not tried the new cylinder head/cams without the manifold, it is difficult to know exactly how good it is - and this also makes assesment of the manifold's effect upon Rolling Road performance in isolation impossible. However, Dave's car should provide some indication, as he's not had any other work done since fitting the manifold... |

Back on topic - I have the Janspeed 4-2-1 manifold its good BUT the heat shield required some modification with a hammer and a hacksaw before going back on the car! |

Hi I just fit on my VVC 1998 a Milltek Sports Performance Exhaust System S/S (i think the Gran Turismo with the tube in the middle of the car), it looks really nice on the car and the noise is not too loudly but my mechanics didn't could put back the heat shield because he had not enough space between the exhaust and the shield, or he told me that he had to cut it so much that we had almost nothing to install. So what do you think about that, do i have any risk for the car ? can i drive like this ? Thanks again for your help. best regards pascandrea PS : some exhaust to sell at these address http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHOENIX-PERFORMANCE-EXHAUST-FOR-MGF-TF_W0QQitemZ8021151467QQcategoryZ38786QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MILTEK-PERFORMANCE-EXHAUST-FOR-MGF-PRE-2001_W0QQitemZ8021180858QQcategoryZ38786QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Stu, I assume you are after a 6 speed Quaife box? If so the chap in Greece I am getting my engine off has one for sale see here :- http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/58910.htm You could get it shipped to Techspeed in the same crate as my stuff if you wanted it :o) |
Steve White |
Steve, is that who I think it is, on XPF? ;o) pascandrea, driving without a heat shield is fine - been doing that for the last 5 years :o) You get a rather hot boot compartment though... |
Rob Bell |
Yep, although the box has now been strengthened so it doesn't break LOL Even if Stu didn’t buy it, a chat with the seller may prove 'interesting' IMHO, especially before spending that amount of money. Hopefully the deal will be secured this week and the power plant shipped back home before X-Mas. Plan is then to have it installed in time for Stoneleigh :D |

Interesting to see these pipes. I suppose because of the short space and the 1-2 requirements of the pipe they are bound to get a bit compromised. And it's interesting to see manufacturers solutions to the problems. Both are chambered. Of the 2 exhausts shown above the Pheonix one is probably the better one. The second has some "blueing" of the silencer box in the middle where there obviously is some sort of primary chambering which would indicate that the exhaust has been used a fair bit. The join in the first bend of the exhaust is an interesting feature. It may be a design feature to minimise the differences between the TF and F pipes in manufacture. However, it looks like they couldnt make a piece of pipe to bend to meet the curve radius needed, and cut and welded two wider radius curves hence the slightly Gothic curve. t mightbe an ptical illusion but likewsie it might be that they just don't have the expensive tool needed to bend 2 1/4" pipe to the tight radius needed. If this is so have to say that I wouldnt satisfied with that! You can buy in the curves. I learned a long time ago that you should look to absolutely minimise the lips burs and intrusions into the pipe for smooth and faster gasflow. |
