MG MGF Technical - Exhaust Problems

Today I was driving my MGF, and noticed there was something wrong with the exhaust. It sounded really quiet.

After driving for a while I also noticed the acceleration performance was also suffering, hardly any acceleration when I put my foot down.

After a while, it was as if something popped in the exhaust, and all was fine again and my MG shot off.

Since then though Ive noticed a strange rattling from the exhaust.

Please note it isnt a standard MGF exhaust but an SP performance one.

Also ive found the radiator in the front comes on after 10-15 mins of driving. checked the coolant etc and all seems fine?

How old is your car..

If its 6+ years and a 60,000+ miler, then I reckon its your CAT.

Its a dodgy subject round these parts ;-)

My CAT blew two weeks ago on my F (67,000 miles) - I ws most surprised.

Anyway, how I noticed was that, when cold the car sounds rattly (and as time goes on, like a metal barrel of marbles).
Also, accelerating onto the motorway, my car just didn't seem to have the umph I normally enjoy.

You'll also note, I had the suddenly the car feels fine gig too..
This is because when your CAT crumbles either the chunks are out of line and in the way (crap performance), or they have rattled clear (temporary, but good performance).

Not breathing properly might explain your engine heat too..

Check your heat sheild by that CAT. Make sure you have no other rattles, and if that's the case, unbolt the CAT and have a look in it.. If its solid inside - you're okay.. If there's bits, or its rattling around, then its new CAT time.

NOTE: - A new CAT from Rover is in the £300 league!
I bought a CAT bypass from Victoria for 30-40 notes.. and you get some lovely performance and sounds gains too..
Also have a new CAT from BM Catalysts for 95quid ready for my next MOT.

okay?

Neil,

Have you got a web address or contact number for BM Catalysts? Think mine's on the way out too!

Cheers,
Tim.

The SP zorst is a loud one any way. You may find that with a CAT bypass the noise is just too much. I have the Miltex version, that is known to be quieter than the SP and my wife just won't drive the car with the CRP fitted!
Steve Ratledge

Steve's right. A CAT bypass is noisy.
Doesn't seem noisy in the car - in fact I love the sound.., but a mate chasing me in his FTO with hedgehog exhaust, said he could here the VVC over his own car!!
P.S. Doesn't go to badly either!

Thanks for the link, Neil. Terrific prices - they only have last year's price list, but a ceramic cat is listed as £64.74 and a steel one at £109.74! The import and presumably MY2000 ones are rather steeper...£345 for the ceramic one. Did you get a ceramic or steel one? Is it identical the the original one?

Cheers,
Tim.
Tim Jenner

Steel - because it lasts longer..
But - my top tip for the day is;-
There £110 on Ebay too (for buy it now) but £95 starting bid.
-- that's where I got mine.
