MG MGF Technical - Exhausted !!
For the past few days, there has been a metallic rattle from the silencer (I thought) on my '95 1.8i . Today, the rattle disappeared, and I got a rather pleasant throaty growl instead, especially under hard acceleration - this then soon changed to also incorporate a whistle, and distinct lack of power. Queen Bee's car was at my local tyre and exhaust specialist, having two new front tyres fitted, so when we collected it I got the guys to check over the F - diagnosis as follows:- Flexible section in down-pipe broken, the rattle is from the cat, not the silencer, and the silencer has also developed a small perforation on the underside, right-hand end. They have quoted me £400.00, including VAT, for the supply and fitment of all the above. My 'local' MGR parts guy reckons that is a good price - what do you think ?? |

The rattle could be bits of the flexipipe that have fallen into the cat: remove and shake out! Might be worth talking to MS - I notice he's doing a stainless box and I think he's doing something longer lasting as a flexipipe... Neil. |

Neil - Moss are also doing a stainless range, from downpipe through to box - total comes to £675.85 !! |

MJ, I have the same symptoms with my F. I also traced the rattles and lack of power to a faulty cat. When I tap on it, I can hear bits moving inside... The flexi pipe looks still OK though. I also get the whistle sound when the gas flow is blocked. Hopefully, this doesn't occur all the time. My advice is to have all 3 parts dismantled to see exactly what to replace/fix... Do not order anything before that. I must take the cat apart and have a look at it... Makes me think I passed next to my dealer this noon and forgot to stop and buy 2 exhaust gaskets for the cat ! doh ! |
Fabrice |
Nik and Anita - you have mail !! Fabrice - flexi-pipe completely broken, cat broken internally, perforation in underside of silencer. Therefore none of the original system was re-usable. Replacement system fitted today, at a further-discounted cost of £350.00 - not too bad, I think. |

MJ, you paid only 350 GBP for flexipipe + cat + silencer + fitting ?? that's more than a bargain ! |
Fabrice |
And not only that, but there is a definite improvement in performance - which leads me to believe that the system was "on the way out" when I bought the car last May. So that makes it an even better deal !! |
