Anyone know what the 82 deg thermostat does and if it differs from the one on the F and if it offers any cooling benefits?

Yep the one in the F is 88 degrees, which means the other opens more quickly.
You must remember that the thermostat controls the temp of the water _entering_ the block, so if you are generating lots of heat then you might want to start with cooler water.

For thrashing the car around a track, yes, for road use I doubt it (and it will cost more in petrol)

Drilling holes is a little snake oily, it comes from the days when the thermostat stopped water circulating, so the thermostat only opened when convection heated the stat, in the F there is continually water circulating, there is a bypass circuit which feeds a small amount of water to the back of the stat so this is not required. The effect would be simmiler in that more water passes at a given temp, but the warm temp is reached quicker with the cooler stat.

I disagree Will: drilling holes in the thermostat ring is not "snake oily" - it is a well accepted racing car preparation practice. Attenuates (but doesn't solve) the temperature fluctuations in the head. Drilling the thermostat ring on a road car leads to longer warm up periods, with concomitant increases in emissions, fuel consumption and engine wear during that period. But there are advantages to doing this (details on this mod on Dieter's site: http://www.lame-delegation.de/mgf-net.de/thermostat/index.htm)

Is an 82ºC thermostat better than an 88ºC item? Debateable. It simply opens at a lower temperature, and doesn't therefore deal with temperature oscillations.

The best cooling options are remote thermostats or the new pressure-sensing TF thermostat (fitted to late '03 MY cars)

This si the first I have heard of "the new pressure-sensing TF thermostat (fitted to late '03 MY cars)" - any more info? Can it be fitted to an F?
