MG MGF Technical - Fao Mr Bell

Rob as you know I have been playing with the front suspension and have today lightend my wallet 207 pounds to replace 4 yokahama A539's. The old fronts were a disgrace on the inside. Well actually bloody dangerous.

So why am I telling you this, well I have a print out of the settings here which I will share with you. Tell me what you think.

Front Axle Rear Axle

LH RH LH RH

Half Toe +0.05 +0.05 +0.02 +0.02

Camber -01.00 -00.89 -01.11 -01.65

All measurments in degrees.

Now what worries me here is that I had these settings before. The camber is just on the manufactures limit and a litte over for the Rear right. I cannot beleive after watching my suspension rise and fall at least 15mm over the weekends good weather, that a coil and damper set up is far superior to hydragas even if it has been lowered. The ride height is about 340mm at say 20 degrees.

Sorry

FAO Dr.Bell !

Hi Stephen,

Inner edge tyre wear with toe-in front and minimal negative camber (all but the rear RH wheel being withing spec)???

Something doesn't add up...

Was the tracking check performed before or after the tyres were replaced?

Regarding ride height and camber - remember that when the suspension rises with temperature, the camber becomes LESS negative - so there should be less wear on the inner edge of the tyre.

Something is wrong here Stephen - whether it is something to do with the thrust angle of the subframes or whether the tracking figures you've got are simply wrong, I can't say... :o(
Rob Bell

Ohhhhh !

The figures are after the tyres were changed. You have me worried here please elaborate on what you think is up with the car !
S Laithwaite

The tracking settings you've got now are absolutely fine Stephen. What I didn't understand was how you could have got the pattern of tyre wear you saw with those settings...
Rob Bell

Phew.

The only concern I have is the negative camber. I say this as it is right on the limit of Rovers tolerances according to the data bank data from the tracking machine.

I can understand this as it is lowered but wonder if I should raise it a little more and have it retracked. Oh I forgot to mention after a 20 mile drive I felt the front tyres for heat. The insides were defintely warmer than the outsides. The rears were much more evenly spread in the temperature. Strange !

For anybody in N.Ireland try C.Hurst Belfast for your tyres. I paid 42 pounds all in for 195 50 15's and 56 pounds for the 205 50 15's. I think this is reasonable for Yokohama A 539's. That is unless your car eats them !!

Thanks Rob any further comments would be appreciated.
