MG MGF Technical - Filling up

Dear All,

Are TF's notoriously tricky when filling up at the petrol station? It doesn't matter whether I shove the nozzle straight in and pull the trigger hard or carefully just poke the end in (oo-er) and try and be as gentle as possible, the trigger simply keeps clicking out.

Am I doing something really stupid, or is there a knack when it comes to filling up?

Cheers,

James

You have to put the filler in only until the first knobbly bit (yes yes, I know...) and fill fairly slowly. Some people have said they need to rotate the filler round slightly, but I don't on my F. I have found some filling stations much worse than others - in one BP station near me none of the nozzles even fit in the F's filler neck!!

Angle the nozzle 45deg to the front, or get the garage to unkink the filler breather tube.

most pumps have a notch just past the bend and I find that "hanging" this on the filler lip seems to work

its a common problem and a pain in the ar#e .. overfilled mine by accident last week and got me shoes wet..

I'm not having any of this 'just to the first knobbly bit' nonsense. I just stick it straight in, sometimes with a little twist and pump in at full power.
I have to treat the Suzuki a little different - I dismount first and only put the nozzle in a little way so that I can watch, but this sometimes traps a small amount of air.

The recommended trick is to insert the nozzle vertically then twist it parallel along the rear wing, when the filler pipe should take the pump at full bore.

Slow filling was very common among pre-'98 Fs and was caused by a twist developing in the filler tube. Since the TF uses the same parts, you might be suffering from this now happily rare problem. To my knowledge, no dealer has refused to correct the fault free of charge, so give 'em a call.

Many thanks guys for the advice, I'll give them all a try when I next fill up and see how we get on.

Cheers,

James
