MG MGF Technical - fitting hardtop/hood cover

I'm trying to buy a hard top for my 96 vvc but need to know are they all the same up to model year 2000 and can I fit without the soft top in place without mods. Also will the latest hood cover(the type which tucks into the boot)fit my 96 vvc,i'm fed up trying to keep the origional from coming loose!!! Thanks Paul

The same hardtop will fit from 1996 right thru to 2003 TFs without problem.

You can fit a hardtop without a softtop but you need to ensure that the rea brackets are in place. They are bolted to the car with the same bolts that hold the softtop in - you need to bolt the hook type bracket in. Have a look in the car and it will be much clearer than me explaining it.

MkII hood cover fits as MkI but you will need to 'posts' to replace the 2 outer t-bar poppers. If you buy a used cover (e.g. from MGF Centre) then make sure you get the fixings as well. Newton Commercial also supply the fixings if you buy new from them. I'm sure that Mike Satur does as well but I've never asked him.

Thanks John but what kept you?!

Sorry Paul

I said, "just going up to the computer room" (family grown & gone and I have a spare room as an office now)

She said, "after you finish washing the dinner things"

You will soon have mail with a page from workshop manual which may help.

Question: just being nosey but why do you want to remove the softtop?

For JohnP

Thought it might be in the way of rear shelf and risk damage to rear screen.Any thoughts on what I should pay for a mint used top?
cheers

They seem to start around £500

Some people have suggested looking through Swap & Floggit or similar and contacting MGF sellers to see if they will sell the hardtop separately.
JohnP

Better to leave the soft top in place surely. That way if you do get a nice sunny winter morning you can whip the hard top off and leave it at home, but still have protection if you get caught out.

Admittedly it will take up the parcel shelf, but if you unzip your rear screen you shoud not sustain any damage.

if you are currently looking at a S/H hartop then look to pay between £500 and £700 depending on age/condition. Alternatively MGF Centre do brand new ones for £850 (black or body coloured), flippin bargain if you ask me (although I think there is going to be a waiting list at this time of year)
