MG MGF Technical - Front/Offside/Upper Ball joint. DIY???

OK, car has just failed its MOT, but only on one ball joint.

Garage said it was a simple job, and I could do it myself if I got the part.

Well I've got the part.

Any tips/tricks before I try and do this??

All help much appreciated.

thanks

LOL, job I can do myself, err not likely.

In typical MGF style, totally corroded in place.

Job for a garage me thinks :-)

>>err not likely<<

you beat me to it in only 39 minutes.

of course, the past 45 mins was spent rejoicing in France thrashing Scotland :-)
JohnP

Whoops - didn't realise you were in Scotland!

You need a dirty great socket to get this undone... Andy and I didn't have too much luck with his (but then the hub was off the car) - but it should be possible for you to do :o)

See Andy's site @ http://www.sfforever.com :o)

nerf :-(

just called garage, they haven't been able to get the old ball join off either.

need to wait til tomorrow morning for the aceletene gas to arrive, they ran out.

why, oh why is it never simple.

train home for me then :-(

Things just get worse.

They can't even get it removed with acetelene :-/

Only option it appears atm, is to saw thru balljoint.

Removed hub, and then find some way of removing reminant part from the hub.

Informed I may not be getting my car back today either.

>>Garage said it was a simple job, and I could do it myself if I got the part<<

Is it worth taking them up on their comment to see if you can get the eventual bill discounted?

I'm an IT geek not a mechanic but I've heard enough people swear about ball joints (sounded like that anyway).

Hope you get it back soon.
JohnP

Well finally got the car back, charged £95
(including £40 for the MOT)

So not too bad for a car thats almost 7 years old.
