MG MGF Technical - Front Shock Absorber Bushes

Just had 60k service, and been advised that though the front shocks are okay, the rubber bushes at the lower end of the shocks are on their way out. Also told that they cannot be replaced as the bushes come as part of the shocks, but I have a feeling that it is possible to simply replace them with nylon(?) bushes from someone like Mike Satur.

Anybody know anything about this...is it possible?

Yes, Mike Satur does bushes specifically for the MGF's shock absorbers. I understand they are quite easy to replace, have a look in the archives. They work out much cheaper than changing the whole unit which is what MGR will sell you. Check his website for prices.

Yes. I've fitted a replacement set of shock bushes and they're quite simple to do.

Or at least, I should say, the bottom ones are very easy to do! I've not got around to doing the top ones which also come as part of the sets. I think the top ones aren't so prone to wearing in any case... Certainly the rear ones on my car were badly worn.

Maybe I'll get around to doing the top ones soon!! You have to stop the shock turning to do the top ones, and I didn't have my fabric oil filter wrench with me at the time (which seems the most suitable tool for the job).

Replaced all the bushes last year using Mike Satur 'Poly Bushes' cost about £35.00 for the set as against about £100.00 per shock.

Job is simple enough takes about 15 minutes per shock BUT you do need to be able to jack the car up and you also need a large wrench or oil-filter wrench to hold the top half of the shock whilst undoing the top nut.

ALSO make sure you use the special grease that comes with the bushes otherwise they squeak like mad.

Ah ha. I have wondered for ages what the hell that annoying sqeak was. Slightly puzzeled though as I have new bilsteins from techspeed and its still squeaking.

Any ideas anybody. Very annoying.

Thanks for all your comments. Have to place my order with Muke Satur.

As an aside, Spring is truly here - just removed my hard-top and been out for a drive. Magic! So much better without a roof!
