MG MGF Technical - Frozen accelerator:

Hi

Have a TF 135 Spark which I left stood on the drive a couple of nights ago. Weather was severe with heavy / severe frost. Following morning it started up and drove ok - a couple of hundred yards down the road accelerator became very stiff and stuck at very high revs. Managed to stop the car switch off and wait a few minutes before restarting. Accelerator still frozen and stuck at high revs. Recovered to a local garage who examined it and thought the cable had become frozen exacerbated by windchill on driving. Drove home and same problem ocurred again overnight (another very severe frost etc.) Placed car in garage where after a few hours it was fine. Has anyone experienced anything like this - or is it something more sinister?

There shouldn't be anything in the cable that physically could freeze, so I'd suspect water has got into it somehow. To be certain of it not repeating it would be best to fit a new cable, since even if you could dry it out somehow there would be a rust issue which could see the symptoms return.

Thanks Mike,

not being technical is the cable within a sleeve? does it run within a channel or how is it routed from the pedal back to the engine? Can someone let me know - it may help me examine it in more detail.

Katrew

There is an inner ans an outer cable routed from the pedal to the throttle body.

If water has come into the outer cable it may freeze in cold weather.

Maybe you could get someone to put in some grease into the outer cable to force out the water. Make sure it is a grease that doesn't harden though.

My 96 vvc had a frozen cable last year, but was stuck at tick over. Up side was a great bike ride through richmond park to get to work in the morning - down side...riding the bike up hill on the way home :-)

Some WD40 and touch wood hasn't re occured.
