MG MGF Technical - Fuel Filler Cap - Problem?
My other half fuelled the car last night, but when trying to replace the fuel filler cap was unable to remove the key when locked. She removed the cap, worked the key and lock, and was able to remove the key when the cap was off the vehicle. When she refitted the cap, again she could not remove the key when locked! Eventually, with some help from the one of the cashiers and a security guard they managed to get the cap on, key out and she drove home OK. I go to check the car and it’s fine – key in, key out, locked, unlocked, cap on, cap off etc etc. Is this a known problem or anything to worry about, or do I need to attack it with WD40 or similar, or get something fixed before there’s a real problem? Thanks in advance. Mike H |

Don't let other half touch the filler cap! Obviously nothing wrong when you do it. My wife claims that she cannot get the filler cap of "my" MGF but I have no similar problem with "her" Micra. It's a girlie thing. OR My filler cap gets a dose of WD40 (or LockLube) whenever I wash & polish and often in between. |

It's a division of labour issue and the natural order of things. We look after the cars and money, they look after the kitchen and iron. Confusing these roles only leads to problems. |

I find I can only put the filler cap back on one way up.... if I do it the other way I get the symptoms above of not being able to get the thing in and the key out... C. |

Sorry, I was assuming that the filler cap was offered to the vehicle with the 3 indentations lining up with the 3 rubbers (or in my case the 1 rubber and the 2 exposwed bolt heads). |

Yep, if the rubber stud is missing, then you may try and fail to fit the cap upside down, so check this before panning her compleatly ;-) |

There is an indicator mark on TF filler caps to line up, so impossible to fit wrong way.Check that this is in line before sueing for divorce! :-) |
