MG MGF Technical - fuel smell inside car

Every time i get into my 1996 mgf it smells of petrol. even when driving it smells unless the heating is on (circulating some fresh air. I have had the sender seal changed twice but it still smells and my faith in rover garages has gone. Any sugestions anyone???

Kev,

Register (it's free) and have a look in the archives. This is a well known problem on early Fs.

Oh ye of little faith!

MGR dealers are not totally useless Kev. As David says, this is a well documented occurence. Mine still does it from time to time - usually after a badly executed fuel stop.

Of course, as it is so well know, the MGR dealers should have told you what the problem is and put your mind at rest.

Hi, cheers for the archive tip and maybe I will try and restore my faith in rover garages. The fuel tank replacement seems the thing to do if that doesn't cure it then I will have to do the match test (only Joking i love the unrealible tin can really).
Cheers

Yeah my 96 F still does this so
I leave it in the garage with the driver's window wound down!

Hi, I went to rover and it was the same old story they said they have never known this problem before so they sugested first changing the fuel tank and if that doesn't work they will check the fuel system. So I thaught I would have a look my self. The last people to work on the car were rover replacing the fuel sender seal. When I took the engine cover off I noticed to my horror that eight of the bolts were stripped so the cover was loose(hence the rattles) also they have stripped the threads of 2 bolts of the sender cover. due to over tightening. So I went to work (toyota) and got some tapered repair bolts they were a sod to get in but the covers are in tight and the smell has gone (due to a better seal round the cover)so hopefully it may have done the trick. Fingers Crossed
