MG MGF Technical - Fuel smell under hard acceleration

Anyone had this? None of the other reported static fuel smells, but I do get a strong pong when I accelerate hard. I wondered about simple overfuelling/unburnt in exhaust, but there's no backfiring, and surely that would have killed the CAT? I can't see any obvious leaks with the engine cover off.
All comments welcome!

Thanks

Hi, I am having the same problem, strong fuel smell under strong acceleration and hard curves. Last time I fill up the tank I saw lots of gasoline dropping on the ground.

My car is almost of the time parked in my garage with the almost empty tank.

Yesterday I remove the engine bay plate, and I find the fuel hose filler cracked and broken. Now I need to buy a new one. I hope that will solve the problem. Remember my fuel tank was replaced under MGR warranty in 1999, after complain about strong fuel smell.

Dieter’s website has got the instructions you need http://www.mgfcar.de/fueltank/index.htm (tanks Dieter)

Hi Joćo,

good to see you found the failure. It is p/n WLH100531 and should be app 20 EURO.

I.e. check for article # 130020144402 at fleebay UK. A bit expensive IMO. Seller is known as reliable, though.

Dieter,

I'm not sure, in my MG ROVER parts CD, the part number (Hose-fuel filler) is WLH100440 , that number is on your webpage instruccions, and also a p/n WLH100531. Is that last one p/n? (sorry about my german)

Jonathan, I agree with you, this doesn't seem to be the usual fuel tank problem. Perhaps there's a fuel leak? I'd be surprised if the smell were due to over fuelling, as unlike carburretors, the fuel injectors are a long way from the airfilter (they inject almost directly into the cylinder head), so any fuel would have a very long way to travel if 'spat back'.

Have you had a chance to remove the engine inspection cover yet?
Rob Bell

Just to add to this thread, I have the same problem (fuel smell under hard acceleration), but only experienced it since fitting my Mike Satur Windbreak - without it the problem wasn't apparent, so assumed it was fumes getting sucked back into the car.
Dave

Thanks everyone. Rob - yes, with the cover off and revving I can't see or smell anything (though static revving will not really reproduce the same conditions as when driving). But Dave - you have struck a chord as I also have the Mike Satur windbreak - I'll try it with it folded down (if it ever stops raining).
Even then it must be coming from somewhere, and can't be the exhaust?
Thanks again

Dieter,

Problem solved, after two weeks I finally finish the car today, replace the fuel filler hose, and I fill up the tank with unleaded 95, made 100km and no fuel smell.... Other strange thing happened though… next I was going to try to the DIY EPAS sensor reset according ROB BELL webpage instructions, but the steering car seams to be fine now, my car always self-steers to the left and it's very hard to turn right at low speed's. Now it seams ok. Could it be because this past 2 weeks the battery was disconnected?..., I hope that stays that way :)

cheers

I have the same problem. The car stinks for a few minutes after I put petrol in and again when driving it hard. Otherwise there is no smell.

Does that sound like the fuel filler hose too? If so, is it a big job?

Thanks.

If it is the fuel filler hose, is this what I need?

I have a 2001 Trophy.

Thanks again.

Yes, WLH100531 is the one. Never changed in design, so fits any MGF/TF.

Wherein, I never heard of a broken one. The only problem with it is the correct fitment.
Dieter

Thanks very much. I may just take a chance and buy it for a tenner. If it does turn out that it has to be replaced I'm sure my local MG Rover specialist will charge me a lot more for one!!
