MG MGF Technical - Fuse blow on 97 MGF when turning left
Hi I m just back with a new question, not my car (we now have 3 MGF & TF) but behalf on someone else! Its a 1997 MGF LHD and it blow a fuse and become dead (imobiliser). Car start and work again as soon as the the blown fuse is replaced. Is this a common thing?? where should we look and for what, as soon as one turn left and "flash" - fuse blow and car is dead! |

Which fuse is blowing? Sounds like a wire is damaged somewhere and making a short circuit when cornering to the left. Traditional areas for wiring faults are behind the centre console & in the rear bulkhead/boot loom, but if you can identify which fuse is blowing that may give a clue where the fault is. |

Hi OK,, just have a little more info - when turning left (FLASHING) fuse number 1 (10A) blows, covers flash various instruments and power steering stops working BUT CAR STILL RUN. But if you then operate the control remote unit like locking car while fuse number 1 has blown, fuse number 5 (I think) under bonnet 15A covering central lock/Alarm also blows - then car is dead!! (obviously) Is the 2nd issue a natural following of the first? just one electrical fault that triggers the 2nd issue? Any help appreciated!! |

There is no link between passenger compartment fuse 1 and underbonnet fuse 3 (central locking) as far as I can see, so a wiring fault or short circuit perhaps behind the centre console would be my first guess. From Dieter's site: http://www.mgfcar.de/schedules/sb1.jpg http://www.mgfcar.de/schedules/sb17.jpg 2nd issue will maybe go away when 1st issue solved - fingers crossed... |

If the fuse blows when you operate the indicator switch, then I would suspect that there is a live wire being short circuited to earth (ground) within the switch mechanism. |

Hi Well, problem solved! Here is the full story ! Car belong to a friend and when we got it in our hands we quickly realized that fuse blew,, but not every time we turned left! hmmm. We had a spare stalk but it did not cure the problem though there was a slight smell of warm leads/ plastic from dash! A deep dive behind console as indicated above was needed and there is was :-) A lead was damadged behind the stereo and making a temporary/periodic short cicuit! Why it only happened when turning left was most probably because some leads in the dash harness were slightly pulled on hard left turns! (I guess) |
