MG MGF Technical - Gear ratios
| Can anyone clear up a confusion for me? Looking at the mg-speed site, they've a whole spiel about gear ratios. As I understood it, all models of MGF (don't know about TF, but believe this applies to Trophy) had the same gear ratios, but with a different final drive ratio. The mg-sped site implies otherwise. | I thought what you thought. God knows how the steptronic works though... |

| Or if you want a better description: http://carcare.unipart.co.uk/when/hycwgears.htm Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) This is one that has been around for a while but has only recently been re-introduced. The principal behind this type of transmission is one of being an automatic but with no real gear selection capabilities. Once such type was known as the 'Variomatic' transmission originally developed by DAF. It relied on centrifugal forces throwing out bob-weights within a pulley assembly and the whole lot was driven by drivebelts. It was considered to be over complicated and impractical. But in reality it was a brilliant idea as it enable the car to virtually 'free-wheel' at higher speeds therefore, saving fuel. The CVT is now available in some of the smaller Ford cars. This type of transmission is ideal for town driving and short 'stop-start' trips more so than for motorway journeys. |

| Sorry, both of those were a little cryptic, but this site is great- simple to follow and diagrams! http://www.ukcar.com/features/tech/transmission.htm |

| Back in the sixties when I drove coaches on the continent the DAF with burnt out 'rubber bands' was a familiar sight on the mountain roads of Europe and you saw them with engines screaming and climbing the hills at about 5 miles per hour followed by a large cloud of blue smoke from the slipping belts. | A-ha. Now I understand. Sort of. |

| Since no-one seems to have answered the original question, here is the data from David Knowles' book. 1.8i final drive 3.938 Steptronic 4.050 VVC 4.200 Manual gearboxes all have the same ratio, Steptronic ratios are all higher but there is a tranfer gear of 1.423. |

| Thanks Brian - pretty much what I thought. E |
