MG MGF Technical - Gear selection issues
Hi All, It sems My old MGF still has gear selection issues. I got a call from the new owners last night asking if I had ideas that could help them out. Apparently when accelerating hard, the gear change goes very spongy and 3rd and 5th can't be selected. If they drive easy for a while it clicks back in again and works fine. Any ideas on this one would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Kieren |

worn engine mounts?? |

Sound like the Elise 'red hose' problem, could the cluch fluid need replaceing? |

Thanks guys, Obviously throws up some questions from little ignorant me - mike, How would the engine mounts affect the gearchange in this way, and what's the best course/cost of action to rectify it. Will, The clutch was changed about 6k miles ago, but I'll get them to check the fluid level. Cheers Kieren |

is the cluch fluid changed at a cluch change? (think like brake pad/brake fluid) |

>> worn engine mounts?? How do you know when they have worn ? Gaz |

>>How do you know when they have worn ?<< The engine moves around too much - I've seen how this affects an old style mini - esp when the engine steady bar breaks on a hill start ! Not sure about the MGF tho' with its cable change. This problem could also be gear box oil level ? |

Will, I changed the master and slave cylinders myself, and the fluid was changed too. I guess it could have gotten low though. I haven't really pushed the car hard at all this year - until that final fateful day. Steve, doesn't the gearbox share the same oil as the enigine? Not ruling any of these things out though, as the gearbox was changd the same day as the clutch and cylinders. Cheers Kieren |

>Steve, doesn't the gearbox share the same oil as the enigine? on the Mini yes, on the F no |

<<the gearbox was changd the same day as the clutch and cylinders>> Kieren, I'm one of natures pessimists so excuse this - was it a 'new' gearbox that you fitted? or if not do you know it's history. You seem to have had gear selection problems since you changed gearbox, clutch, master and slave cylinders. How long since the change? Were there any warnings (other than the problems you posted just before you sold the car)? If you are happy with the components and your mechanicing then it does sound fluidy - gearbox level and/or clutch fluid causing drag? |

Hi John, The gearbox came off an accident damaged car with 30k on the clock. It was all changed 2 1/2 years ago, about 6k miles. I'm hoping that it is fluidy... cheers Kieren |
