There are two partnumbers as the gearbox is operated by two different cables. Most of the time both of them are changed when 1 of them has snapped. An ex-MGRover dealer must be able to supply the part. Let me know if you have a problem and I call my dealer. |

Hi there are 2 gear selector cables. Mine broke earlier this year. One of the two is prone to breaking - usually the one that breaks is the alternate Gear cable, MG part number - ULS100070 I order one fromt he UK online from sales@ukmgparts.com I also used the wonderful instructions from the guys on this site to replace it (and saved a bundle of workshop fees). |

You delt with Brown & Gammons who are very helpfull and I have had nothing but great service over the past few years. They make owning an MG on the otherside of the world so easy as does Mike Satur. |

Quote "No answer from mike satur..." I believe he's away at the moment. Think he said he was going on the Treffen. |

On the basis that prevention is better than cure is this something that needs to be greased? Is it something that should be part of the service schedule or should I be looking to do something about it myself? Andy |

The most frequent place where the cable breaks is at the gearbox end where the cable is crimped into the end socket, which is clearly the point of highest stress. This is not helped by the slight bend in the cable that develops with time as the cable creeps through the last clamp. Dieter has some very good pictures on his website of the break and a diy fix. Greasing the cable must help to reduce forces, as does replacing the rubber sleeve if it is perished, but it also helps if you can ensure the end of the cable is routed in a straight line. This can be done by pulling the gear cable back hrough the clamp to remove the slight bend that usually develops over time. Mike Satur sells a small clamp to keep the cable lined up, which should mean you can fit it and forget about the problem. This has been a recent developemnt and while the theory sems good, only time will tell if it cures the problem. On the point about servicing, I have taken my F to a number of different main dealers over the years and none of them left tell-tale smears of grease around either end of the cables, so I can only assume they are not on the service list.
