MG MGF Technical - Gearbox Problems after 30000 miles
I have an MGF 1.8i and after 30,000 miles I am told I need a new gearbox at a cost in excess of £1,800, is this a common problem. Anyone experience the same and what did your dealer/MG do about it? |

Depends what the problem is. I have heard of gearboxes needing relacement when the oil level is allowed to get low. Circa 1 litre or less on a 2.2 litre capacity. Usually as soon as the oil level drops so there is a noticeable increase in gearbox rattle and noise, especially at idle, Rog |

Adam In the almost 7 years that I have been reading these boards I do not think I can recall another case of gearbox failure - so my opinion is NO it is not a common fault. Ted |

Adam, if the cost is not manageable then consider a good secondhand one from any of the F specialist breakers (see FAQ etc) - should be just a few hundred quid. |

<<I have heard of gearboxes needing relacement when the oil level is allowed to get low>> and how are you supposed to check? hints and tips? |

Sorry to hear your problem Adam. If it is a case of having to have a new gearbox and you decide against a 2nd hand one then why not pop for a close ratio job from Brown & Gammons - That costs £1250 +VAT (£1470 all in). Cheaper than you have been quoted and sure to give a bigger grin !!!! |

Adam I may be completely wrong here, but it might be worth checking anyway. Isn't the CR gear box on the MGF the same as that in the Elise S1? In which case you can get a box for £795 + VAT www.eliseparts.com, but I may be barking up the wrong tree completely. DJ |

Your best bet is to get in touch with MOTOBUILD RACING who can supply a close ratio Lotus box for £895 plus vat and fitting! Duncan. |
