MG MGF Technical - Goodyear F1 Worn Out after 4000mls
Chaps, I have a 99 T plate F' and have replaced the rear set of tyers. I have Goodyear F1 Eagles 215/40 ZR16 on LE Rims. I have had to replace them after 4000mls wear. I dont drive the car hard, as most of my driving is motorway mileage. Has anybody else had a similar experience with these tryes. They have been sent back to Goodyear for analysis but they are confident that the tyres are not at fault. The wear is also even across the whole tread. |

definate prob somewhere, have you had car lowered recently by any chance could be a cause as not set up right, im,e sure you will get some useful info from guys on here ,good luck Dave T6 DCM. |

No, it has not been lowered, but was in a rear end shunt in May of last year. This was the point at which i decied i may as well have new rubber as well. |
Paul |
Must admit it does sound low mileage specially as you say it has even wear accross it. When the 16" wheels originally came out there where problems with tyres wearing out quickly but this was normally uneven wear. Where both tyres the same wear? Maybe worth having a wheel alignment just to confirm no weid angles specially as you say you had a rear shunt last year. Tom |

I share everyone's surprise. If the wear is even over the entire tread, it makes a tracking problem a lot less likely. I'm at a loss to explain why your tyres have such accelerated wear PG - F1s are usually good for 20k+ miles. |
Rob Bell |
On a TF 160 the rears last about 12k mls the fronts projected about 20k mls. And I drive enthusiastically. Therefore unless you are really thrashing it 4k sounds very poor especially on motorways. |
Ian |
The tyres on my trophy are good for another 5/6k miles currently 13.5k Mike Driven hard, on country roads not much m/way. |
Mike |
Difficult one Paul, all i can suggest is i think you should if haven't done by now have your tracking/ alignment checked, and wonder what test results of tyres will be, keep us posted, cheers DAVE |
DC Morris |
Asumming that both tyres had indeed worn evenly across the tread and they are both on the rear, fitted to the correct or permissible rim and have been maintained at the correct pressure(as even wear shows). If no manufacturing faults are found, then I have one possibility, you say mainly motorway travel,as the period in my part of the country between last May and now has been extremley wet, motorway surfaces can with all this extra water and a combination of dirt and grit/grime act like a grinding paste. Its may sound unlikely but this has happened before. With a bit of luck you and standing your ground may receive an allowance from the manufacturer |

Blimey. 4K. I have the same tyres on my 1.8i and on investigation on this board before buying my MG I wasn't expecting much more than about 15k. However I'm at just under 25k miles for my rears (and I drove to the South of Italy and didn't hang around, especially thro' France!). They need replacing very soon though. God knows how far I'll get out of the front set? I didn't think I drove like a pansy, but I must do to get this sort of distance out of them. Just out of interest, for a pair of Eagle F1's 215/40 ZR 16, I've been quoted £82.25 each inc. fitting. That's the cheapest I've found. Anyone know anywhere cheaper? Jodi |
Jodi |
Very, very strange. 12-20K from a set of rear F1's, I'd have thought. |
David Bainbridge |
>>>>but was in a rear end shunt in May of last year. === sounds like the first place to start investigation, IE rear end alignment, as the others recommended |
David |
Nope, Can't beat that. £86.95 including balancing and fitting here. http://www.jeffreyshpt.co.uk/ Can recommend this place if you live in the northwest and don't want your alloys chewed up. Andy |

Not as bad as 4k, but I had 17k from the rear on my first pair of F1's (205/50/15). The last pair I had on over the last few months lasted 8k. I do not believe I have driven the car any harder. Jeff - 1998 VVC |

all i can add is im'e glad i didn't get f1's and went for 215/40/16 Yoko's instead, same price but have to be better value as have done 5k already and they still look like new, Dave |
DC Morris |
http://www.mytyres.net/start.html £74ea for TF rears. Fitting about £8 at local chimps. |
Ian Walker |
Oh and those were the GY Eagle F1 GSD-3's the new ones that won the EVO tyre test last year. |
Ian Walker |
Just a wild stab in the dark, but were they fitted the wrong way round (being unidirectional)? I got at least 20k from my first set. Lewis |
Lewis |
Thanks for all the replies, in reposne to the previous thread, both rears are fitted the correct way. Also the car does not get driven hard at all. I do 25 miles a day at @ 70 --> 75 on the mway. Both tyers have worn even. I spoek to somebody yesturday, and they did mention it could be the suspension set up. Any ideas ? |
Paul |
Yes, highly likely, especially as you had a shunt. No sensible alternative other than to get a full laser 4-wheel alignment check done, as recommended already by others. |
David |
>Just out of interest, for a pair of Eagle F1's 215/40 ZR 16, I've been quoted £82.25 each inc. fitting. That's the cheapest I've found. Anyone know anywhere cheaper? Get some Toyos, much cheaper. Just as good.... |
T.E.D |
Tony, what Toyos are those (any particular model?). And do they last longer? I must say I think my F1s have worn very quickly at the rear. In 2500 miles they've gone from almost new to half worn... but then I do like to tailslide occasionally so I suspect that has something to do with it :-/ . Front tyres still look new hefty price to pay for a bit of fun ... 200 quid every 5000 miles If Toyos or Yokohamas are longer lasting and just as good, I'd obviously rather go for those sorry a bit off subject |
Anthony |
"hefty price to pay for a bit of fun ... 200 quid every 5000 miles" Bit like running a modern high powered bike except 200 quid would be quite nice! |
JohnP |
Anthony Just got my car back from its second year service yesterday. I knew that the tread on the rear tyres was getting a bit low (16,000 miles on clock), but I'm now told that it is only 1.8mm. I think that I need to do something sooner than later. To cut a long story short, on Tony and other's recommendations I'm going for Toyo Proxes T1-S all round. Price for four 205/50R15s is £220 including fitting and balancing. My front tyres (NCT 3s) are like new but I've decided to replace them as well and go for the same size all round so that I can swop them about. I know that I might get some tramlining but I'm prepared to put up with that. David p.s. How do you measure tread depth to 1.8mm. I thought that you would be doing well getting it to the nearest mm. |
David Clelland |
Cheers David. That sounds like a really good price for the Toyos. I'd like to put the nearly new front tyres at the back and buy narrower front tyres (to reduce the tramlining) and would have bought Toyos but I don't dare have different treads front and back. |
Anthony |
DC - with a trread depth gauge - you prod a pointer into the tread and the nededle moves round a scale making it easy to read to 0.1 mm.... |
David |
David, Thanks, I just didn't think that it would be accurate to 0.1mm DC |
David Clelland |
Jodi, Try http://www.micheldever.co.uk/ they quote £73.47 each for Goodyear eagle F1 215/40 16 inc VAT and fitting. I had a pair fitted last friday :-) |
Tony |
£65 inc fitting and balancing... Winterstoke Reading or Bracknell Tyre & Battery.. --Andy Although wheel alignment was all awful! |
