I seem to remember the Toyo Proxes T1-R getting a good write up on Rob Bell's site

Toyos always get good write ups - they are affordable and perform well.

There may be a couple of tyres from the Falken range worth trying, most specifically the FK-452 which the Toyota MR-2 owners rather like. Not heard much feed back from MG owners on these yet though.

Not familiar with Nexen at all I am afraid.

A lot can depend on your Budget, but Bridgestone FE-040s are meant to be good, as are BF Goodridge G-Force Profilers (on Lotus Elise).
Other tyres to consider, going from internet polls of magazine tests are Pirelli P-Zero Nero (about £52 a boot from internet tyre suppliers), Michelin Pilot Sport, Continental Premium Contact 2.

I have experience with the Michelin and the Continentals on our MG ZTT and can say that both are superb tyres. The Michelin probably has the edge, but is rather more expensive. What I don't have experience with is how these tyres perform on an MGF. When the new set of Bridgestone S-02s are worn out, I'll be forced to find out... I think that I'll experiment with a set of Michelins... :o)

Hope this helps

Cheers Rob .. have been checking your web site as advised by Pete

will see about the Pirelli P-Zero Nero if not Im going to go with th Toyo's ... will let you know how I get on ...

the GSD3 fronts still have plenty of life left in them so hoping the Toyos dont throw the old girl out to much.

thanks Pete and Rob

Rob,

>>Toyos always get good write ups - they are affordable and perform well.

Mike had an awful time at Silverstone the other week with his Toyos - he wasn't impressed at all.

I've just replaced GSD2s with Proxes T1-R all round on my Trophy and they seem fine, just experimenting with pressures at the moment as the old 36R/24F doesn't quite work. I've noticed that there's more road noise too(but I find that if I keep the revs at 3000 and above the Miltek takes care of that!)

Dave, were they very new tyres? Interesting. Just as well I didn't go down that route then!!!
Rob Bell

I had similar problems with the GSD-2's. MGOC and Brown & Gammons both recommended the Toyo Proxes T1-R so I've changed them all round. I only needed 3 but had to throw a perfectly good (5,000 mile)GSD-2 away to replace all four. The road noise is slightly louder with the Toyos but so far they have performed well.

I also changed the size on the front to 195/45/16, (previously they were 215/40/16 all round)which was also recommended by MGOC. I think this is the size I had at the front on my old '97 VVC. Why MG changed, I don't know.

Rob,

>>Dave, were they very new tyres?

I don't think so - check with Mike (Hall) directly.

>> Why MG changed, I don't know. <<

Easy. 195/45 R16s were not available when MGFs on 16" wheels started to become available in 1997/8. So they used 215/40 R16s all round. Expediency. :o)

195 section front tyres are the best I've found for handling versus tramlining - and are definitely the size I'd recommend. So obviously I've gone and bought 205/45 R16s all round - just to get back on S-02 rubber!!! ROFL

I understand that Goodyear have a shipment arriving from Germany this week and that my name is on two of them.
Make sure that your GY Dealer has some on order. They will get them before Kwik Knacker.

You should try etyres, the service is fantastic and so are the prices. They currently have some GSD3 in stock.

Simple service:

1. Go to www.etyres.co.uk
2. Enter your tyre requirements
3. select tyre and quantity
4. enter address and contact number
5. Select date and time to suit
6. At the given time a man equiped with everything turns up your home or work and fires them on.

I have used them in the past and they have been great.

If it helps I have listed some prices below from etyres based on the 195/45/16:

GSD3 - £71 inc fitting
Pzero nero - £67 inc fitting
toyo proxes T1-r - £65 inc fitting

PS: I don't work for etyres, I just like to give credit where credit is due... :0)

The Pirelli is said to be an excellent tyre - and at that price very competitive! :o)

I can also highly recomend Dunlop SP9000's.
I have a set fitted on my spare/trackday alloys and they easily match GSd-2's for grip in the wet & dry.
They are also £5 a corner less the GSD-3's.
Steve White

Read some good things about the SP9000 Steve - although the Pirelli and Michelin I mentioned above are meant to be better still...
Rob Bell

I run Dunlop SP9000's on my Volvo Estate! They are good at stopping in the wet.

I managed to get some GDS02s for my rear, from demon twats, back in November.

Etyres are brilliant.
1) They price match - so you can get the cheapest price
2) They come to you - mobile fitter will do it at work on your drive whereever
3) After you have bought 3 yres they will do free puncture repair.

MG Rover specifically stated that GSD3s should not be fitted to Fs and TFs. Having seen, and heard of, several of these tyres where the side wall has split I can see why! I'm sure these tyres are okay on other cars, but they don't seem to be on ours.

David, I have two GSD3's with loads of tred if you are interested. I had a mix of D2's and D3's and it didn't work to well so replaced all four with Toyos. I live in Southampton.
