MG MGF Technical - Handles like a different Car !!!
Hi all Just picked my car up from Techspeed after having their suspension fitted as well as polyflex bushes all round.... First impressions......... Wow!!!!!!!! It handles like a different car....feels much happier diving into corners...Giving you much more confidence to throw it about more... The ride is a little harsher probably due to the newness of all the parts and the stiffness of the new bushes...but the handling and roadholding far outweighs this...... Well pleased although my wallet is still gasping for air !!!! Regards all Stu |
Stu |
Stu, Can I be cheeky and ask how musch air your wallet is gasping for :-) David |
David Clelland |
Well its not that easy.. as i had other work done at the same time.. But the techspeed suspension 4 nipple job ..polybushes all around, braided brake hoses,2 ball joints, 12 new wheel nuts and a 60k service, Circa £ 1800 Ouch..... |
Stu |
Welcome to the techspped crew! now get yourself on some track days so you can realy appreciate your new suspension! I hope you got a nice techspeed sticker too ! |
Kingsley |
Blinking eck! £1800!!! that's a deposit on a new car! I have my F in my garage and Ive written a nice letter to santa saying Dear Santa i have been a good boy this year and I would like: big discs braided hoses hard bushes cambelt etc and spend all my remaining 2003 holiday entitlement getting greasy!!! a fraction of the cost! |
neil |
Well call me old fashioned but that is rather a lot Approx 20% of what I paid for the car! Mind you, does the 60K service include Cambelts? |
T Green |
You reckon £1800 is expensive, that is a bargain as after visiting Techspeed you will not want a new car so when you add it together the cost of modifing the car against the cost of buying a new one it wins as yes you might be driving a old car but it has already depreciated but drives like a new car or in fact better. Any way sounds like another Happy Techspeed customer welcome to the nipple club Stu. Tom |

Took my Techspeed modified F to the NEC (&back) last week in some dreadful weather. Never gave the handling any consideration - the car just did everything asked of it. Looking back, that certainly didn't used to be the case ! Well worth the money. (Sorry Kingsley - no stickers on my car at all) Steve (ps I didn't really like the Aprillia Tuono after all :-) ) |
Steve |
I'd love to be able to afford to visit TechSpeed as I know I would love the results but currently I find my F handles OK for me. Can I join the Nipple Club without visiting TechSpeed? Stu - let us know how your car was at North Weald. |
JohnP |
John You can join the nipple club without visiting Techspeed as the indervidual nipples are available from B&G I believe. Personally I would not bother unless you have the full monty done to the suspension. Tom |
Tom Randell |
>>Can I join the Nipple Club without visiting TechSpeed?<< Only if you are known to your chums as 'Scaramanga' and own a golden gun John! LOL ;o) North Weald was brilliant today, but I'll let Stu tell his story :o) |
Rob Bell |
Hi all Yep as Rob stated I picked the car up from Techspeed on Wednesday afternoon and was at North Weald on Thursday.... When we arrived the sun was shining but the courses laid out were nice and wet !!! What fun !!! Its the first time I've done anything like that and boy it showed !! But I am sure Rob spent more time spinning around in circles than I did !!!! The difference the "Team Scaramanga+1" suspension has made is amazing ...it honestly felt like a different car driving over there..It gave me much more confidence to push the car into bends and at North Weald you could push it to and over the limit in relative safety ! A superb day, the only casualty on my side was a broken nearside indicator lense when a cone jumped out in front of me ! Honest !!!! I suffered this embarressment well as I had just witnessed another of the team crucifying a cone... Unfortunately a jack was required to remove the casualty on this instance and from what I understand the cone is now in St. Thomas's and out of intensive care !!!! It was also great to test out the ABS and boy does it work well, Slamming the brakes on a 70 whilst cornering in the wet, I was amazed how much control I retained and did not spin at all on this exercise... A great day out !! I'm Hooked !!! Really nice to meet you at last Rob... David have you sussed you problem out yet? Cheers STU |
Stu |
Hi Stu, Well I'll own up to being the third F driver to clip a cone - a glancing blow, as I fishtailed half-way up the long narrow straight in the wet! Truly a great day - especially since we managed to set times in the Fs that were better than some of the Elises - so we did ourselves proud. Did you manage to find that part-number for the clear indicator set - it's in the archives. > >David have you sussed you problem out yet? Local MGR mechanic says it's a VVC solenoid that's stuck, but TechSpeed's factory floor contacts say that if that were the case the ECU would go failsafe and not allow anything above 5K revs. As you saw yesterday, my rev limiter kicked in way beyond 5K revs ;-) the car running perfectly above 2K. Below 2K it is lumpy and lacks power. At idle it has a distinctive heartbeat drum in the exhaust note and it's doing 1100 revs rather than the correct 900. Roy @ TS says to check out the inlet manifold for any air leaks or blockages. I'll take a look tomorrow. Other than that it's booked in to go on testbook on Tuesday - earliest they can do. I just hope it's sorted in time for the rolling road session. Dave |
Dave |
Stu, Tim sent me the footage of the cone-under-car incident... ROFLMAO! I think if I had not been going sideways over the finish line, I'd have bettered the 1'23" time... ;oD LOL BTW drove home with the roof down... I imagine most folk must have considered me mad too - especially as it started to pour with rain as I entered inside the M25 boundary... Missed my windstop - what useful devices to stop roadspray on the INSIDE of the windscreen and on the rear view mirror. ;o) |
Rob Bell |
Hi guys LOL your right, I think the elise guys were a little surprised..And did you see the pissing about you have to do to put the top down on them....its like a meccano kit... One of the Elise guys done a circuit with me and said " Cor ! its comfy in here isnt it ! " I haven't had chance to sort out the part number for the indicator kit so if you have the part number handy it would be great ...otherwise will check it out tomorrow... I cant confirm for the 8th yet David.. I thought I was in Milan Monday but now I'm goin to Dublin it seems !! I am hoping to put Milan off to the following Monday so I am free ...but will confirm asap...I think i can wangle it so count me in the numbers... Hope the Test book identifies your problem See you then guys hopefully STU |
Stu |
"I understand the cone is now in St. Thomas's and out of intensive care !!!! " It's only in St Thom's becuase the perpetrator works there... Can you guess who it was......? :0P Tim |

Ding Dong! Ted |
Ted Newman |
Great news - the cone is off the critical list chaps, and is expected to make a speedy recovery! ;o) |
Rob Bell |
Dave: check the cam sensor plug and socket - right on top of the cam cover (left hand one as you look at it from the rear of the car - the 3 right hand ones are on the VVC unit). Mine was doing EXACTLY the same thing on Thursday and it was that Mel hadn't pushed the connector home when refitting it. (Could of course be the sensor that's gone too, of course...) Good luck. Neil (back on the road in a VERY quiet NNW49 - I hadn't realised how much it was rattling!) |
Neil |
Thanks Neil, I'll check that out tomorrow too. Dave |
Dave |
Just to report back I had a good ferret around the engine bay over the weekend, but can't find any sensor loose or any breather pipe obstructed or leaky. It's going in to my local MGR dealer tomorrow for a session on the testbook. I just hope that they can diagnose the problem before the rolling road session this Sunday. Dave |
Dave |
OK, so the conclusion, for those interested, is that the dealer testbook showed a faulty "VVC Spool Valve and two solenoids". Some sort of hydraulic control mechanism for the VVC system. Anyway, £220's worth of fix - split roughly 50:50 parts:labour. Ouch! At least I'll make the Rolling Road session on Sunday :-) Dave |
Dave |
drool with envy.... I want track days too... with other Fers! |
Hanah Kim |
Was the Ferret unharmed Dave ;-) ??? |
D Jamieson |
A ferret would have been cheaper than the MGR dealer! |
Dave |
Hanah, This is a rolling road day - you know a workshop with a Dynamometer for measuring BHP, Torque and stuff! See http://members.aol.com/emeraldm3d/ which is the actual RR we're going to. Fourteen MGs currently booked. Shame you can't join us - you'd certainly qualify for the title of 'furthest travelled' F :-) For a track day dedicated to MGs, get over here for March 2003 - more later ;-) Dave |
Dave |
:-) Hi Dave, thanks. Yeah I know what the rolling road is.. I want to join that as well... want to see how much my car can do... (133hp at wheels I will be happy with) Thanks for the 'cool prize'.. if I can make it! If you are going to visit NZ, let me know! I am in Auckland. |
