MG MGF Technical - Hardtop on ebay

A quick question about hardtop fitting...

I was looking at a hardtop on ebay...

I emailled the seller, and it's a Mk 2 hardtop (1997). Are hardtops a generic fit - will it fit Mk 1's, or even the TF (Thinking of getting a TF!! - Not of ebay though!).

Yes it should fit both your F and a TF if you buy one in the future. However, the seals have been upgraded at least once since hardtops were first introduced. I would recommend that you try it before you buy it if at all possible. Price is very cheap. I would expect it to go for at least £600. I know of a very early black one that sold on Ebay recently for £800.

They will fit F or TF, BUT, you need to fit it on your car to make sure that it is a good fit.
I bought mine through an ad on the net and paid £600 which I think is good value. It is used for approx 16 weeks a year. Most are black but for around £200 you could have it painted to match your car with around £80 needed to paint the windscreen surround.

Tony, I have a black hardtop and thinking of getting it painted to match COF ( flame red ) the colour of my F. However as my F is a 1997 model I am worried about the paint may of lost its colour a bit. What do you reckon about matching the colours? What also do you mean about getting the windscreen surround painted? Cheers.

Come on lads, Brand new hardtops in your own colours at MGF Centre, Cheaper than these 2nd hand ones.

A reputable paint shop will match your colour and the rest of the car can be buffed and waxed to revive the colour.
Your car would have been supplied new with the windscreen surround painted black. The 2000MY cars have this painted in body colour which if you leave Black, will look odd against the hardtop when painted to match the car.

The mark 1s have a black winscreen surround (to match the original black hardtops..??)

Mark 2s have colour coded surrounds,
