MG MGF Technical - head gasket

ive been reading now for while with intrest the problems with hgf's.

my question is if/when it happens is there a new head gasket out there that gives you safe knowledge that it wont happen again??-or will it ????
is there one make of gasket you should buy??
or are they all the same and it does not matter which one you buy?

cheers
pat.

p.s dont want to tempt fate(mine has not gone yet-and i dont want it to, i was just wondering)

There is a new type of gasket but still not 100%

My advice is to get a low water level alarm fitted.

The temp gauge in the red is just to late is happened.

Cost around £50 DIY

well guess what ..........
car went into the garage today and my head gasket is leaking....sods law.
no tell tale signs so hopefully no trouble inside the engine.
the leak its self is on the outside ,(if that makes sense)dripping down the engine.
getting it in asap hopefully all be done before xmas.

thankfully the warranty will pay the first £500 towards the cost,so a bit of a bummer, but not to bad as i was expecting to pay for it all.

The LR gasket is the latest/uprated gasket which from all accounts is a good belt and braces approach.
Theres loads of info in the archives on the head gasket issue.
IMHO yes the gasket may go again dispite doing all the precations.
One thing to mention is that people post on here when they have a problem ,(me included:0).)
The mgf t/f do have a lot more hgf than other cars but no one is going to start a thread and say "my gasket is perfect" incase it goes next week!!
Theres mgf and tfs out there still on the same original gasaket.
Do the regular coolent checks and the low level water sensor is a must have in my opinion it could save your engine/gasket or head if you have a coolent leak

Just been reading these comments, and have a quick question. Is it just coolant level reduction that signifies a HGF, as I am starting to see water in my Oil on the dipstick (that light brown goo), but no oil in the water at all, and no reduction in water level?
Thanks for anyone who answers time, and a Happy Christmas to you all!!!

Clive,
Loss of coolant can be caused by plenty of less serious things (which are nevertheless worth fixing pronto)! Some brown goo in the oil of a little used car in this colder weather is not necessarily an indicator either. If you regularly drive it for half an hour continuously and you still have brown goo; it is definitely worth a pressure test and possibly a sniffer test at a good garage. I hope it is a happy outcome for you!

update:
got my back on weds, all done and dusted £678(luckily the warranty paid the first £500)
i had no signs of oil in the water.

or water in the oil.

the reason we found mine was,it went in for a cam belt/service last month and when it came back oil started to appear on my drive,
so i took it back to the garage thinking it was something they had done.

but it was the head gasket weeping outwards(if that makes sense)
i did ask him when they finished the job on weds if it was torn/had a big split ,and he said you could not even see anything wrong with the gasket, but it was leaking.

going to do some big miles in it over the next few months then take it back just to see for myself there is no oil leaking out.

happy crimbo!!!

Mine went the same way, outwards and at the same time of year some 5 years ago. After some very hard KM's since, touch wood every thing has been fine.
