MG MGF Technical - Heated Rear Window not working!!!
Winters here and the Hardtops back on, but the heated rear windows not working. To begin with I checked the fuse and that's OK. I then checked all the connections and they were OK. When engaging the switch on centre console, you do hear the noise of the relay working, as the sound is coming fron the passenger compartment fuse box. Is it the switch that needs replacing????? |

Stu Do you have the engine running? I seem to remember that the rear window heater only works in this mode. Ted |

Yes the engine is running |

Stu, get a multimeter and check for power working it's way through the system. You can check the switch is passing current. Check current gets to the connector at the back screen. Also worth checking the heating element for continuity. |

Hi All, Have similiar problem. Bought hard top from speaclist, which they fitted yesterday and charge a hugh fitting fee(they said it was to adjust the hard top so it would fit properly). They also fitted relay and switch for heated rear screen but found it would not work. They said they didn't know why it would work, but they could probably fix it but would cost me a couple of hours labour (at £45 p/h). Wouldn't mind but I brought the car from them as well only a couple of months ago. These garages charge for every little thing - they just never have any remorse. I am surprised the MGCC let them recommend them. Anyway has anyone got any suggestions as I'm not great with electrics. Thanks, Dunc. |

Dunc, I bought my hardtop second hand last year and after I fitted it myself (only four catches to adjust) I took it to my dealer to check over. Workshop foreman checked it over for free and I didn't buy the car from them. Also, I take it that you had the engine running and not just the ignition switched on when you tried to see if it was working. DC |

Hi David, I have tried the HRW with the car running, but I still get nothing. Any further suggestions?? Its nice to know that not all dealers are money hungry. Thanks, David. |

Stu & David my comments from 30th Nov still apply - if you haven't already put a meter (or at least a small 12v light bulb) around the system then now is the time to do it. Connect across the white plastic connector in the hoodwell and see if power is getting through. If it is live there then there is a break in the rear screen wiring or even the elemnet itself. Again, a meter will test for continuiy in the element. Should take no more than 30 mins to test the entire circuit step by step. BTW I'm not an electrician but an accountant but I managed it. |
