MG MGF Technical - Heater always on

I wonder if anyone can advise me ? The heater is constantly giving out hot air, even when I turn the dial all the way off, the dial still has some effect, as when I turn it up it gets a lot warmer.

I think the heater valve may be sticking or the cable could be kinked, who can advise me where I can find the heater valve to have a look.

Thanks

Marcus,

There is a wire link between the heater know and the valve behind the centre console.

This could have become dislodged or bent.

You can gain access by taking off the triangular panels at each side of the centre console.

Good luck!

Alternatively the plastic knob could be broken and rotating on the shaft a quite common problem. Pull it off and check it has not cracked open.

Mine is just rotating on the shaft. Currently in the 'off' mode it just constantly turns and turns without any of the 'clicks'. I do have shiny ones on (metal) but how do you get them off? do they just pull off, or do you need to lever something behind them? They do appear to be well stayed put!

The plastic heater knobs should just pull off, they can be tight, you may need to start them moving by insering a blade / fine screwdrive behind the knob, once they start to move they usually come off ok, you need to take care not to damage the facia. Some of the after market Aluminium ones have a grub screw that is meant to align with the flat on the shaft of the switch, if yours are like this you should be able to adjust the grub screw, this will be a trial and error process. There were also aluminium covers sold that just cover the top of the plastic knob these I believe are held in place with a screw.
Dave

The Best way I found to get the knob off is by using a large pair of bull nose pliers but you must use 2 pieces of rubber between the jaws and the knob surface. Inspect the plastic shaft on the knob and see if the metal clip is intack. Sometimes the metal clip stays on the metal shaft in the dash when you extract the knob. If that happens you will need to use long nose pliers to extract the clip. If the plastic shaft is split it can be fixed by forcing on a small tube over it.

Another way to fix. Similar to Branko's suggestion is to glue the crack with superglue, and then cover / rap with shrink wrap electical insulation tubbing.
Dave

Thanks guys, i'll have a look and give it a go.
